AppleTV Advanced Settings (Post PsyRDO)

Post by Cavalicious »

As always, there are some rules that must be adhered to if you plan on posting in this thread or trying any settings that are posted:
  • 1. Get familiar with these Threads - ATV Advanced Settings (DVD Source) & ATV Advanced Settings (HD Source) & ATV 2.x Advanced Settings (All Sources)
    2. Understand that we are trying to squeeze as much quality out of the AppleTV while maintaining some sort of balance between Speed and Size (maybe).
    3. Be aware, not everything is going to come out pretty. Since Apple isn't providing anything by way of reliable specs, we're (as dynaflash would say) throwing crap at the wall and seeing what sticks.
    4. Don't expect perfection, but you may maintain a perfectionist's attitude.
    5. Some settings may require you to compile SVN releases. If you don't know how, don't discuss here.
    6. If you haven't upgraded to AppleTV 2.x, this isn't the thread for you.
    6a. AppleTV software hacks add too many variables. If you hacked yours, don't complain if something doesn't come out right.
    7. Cabac stays on. There is no need to be here if you insist on using :cabac=0
    8. Minimal subq setting is 6. This is a pro PsyRDO thread.
    9. This is a CRF thread. ABR is too "safe" for us. :twisted:
    10. Try at you own risk! If your AppleTV catches your house on fire during quick pans, we are not responsible!
    11. Use Code Blocks!
    12. DO NOT HIJACK THIS THREAD! I refuse to go through all the effort of splitting off posts of those that can't follow rules. If you hijack, your posts will be deleted and you will be banned for a week.
Ok, all of that said...

I asked a question earlier this month about the images below: "Can you tell which capture is from a..." Well the answers are below each image.

http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/7281/jttcote3fr7.png
Original DVD (via dvd.app)

http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/7900/jttcote2yg8.png
r1886 62%

Code: Select all

ref=3:mixed-refs=1:bframes=3:weightb=1:direct=auto:no-fast-pskip=1:me=umh:subq=7:analyse=all:b-adapt=2
http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/1899/jttcote1io3.png
r1868 65%

Code: Select all

bframes=6:ref=6:mixed-refs=1:subq=6:me=umh:no-fast-pskip=1:trellis=1:direct=auto:bime=1:merange=24
The point I was trying to make was we are now approaching a point of transparency when in reference to DVDs. If this is indeed the case, then one would now focus on the Size of said encode or the Speed of the encoding.

Personally, I believe the Original DVD image looks worse (washed out), while the middle (62%) looks the best.

Let me start this off by saying that Dynaflash's/Jbrjake's:
62% CRF

Code: Select all

ref=3:mixed-refs=1:bframes=3:weightb=1:direct=auto:no-fast-pskip=1:me=umh:subq=7:analyse=all:b-adapt=2
is currently my new default DVD Source preset.

Of course, this can change in 5...4...3...

I've been a little wary of setting the built-in preset to use as high a quality as 62% since the CRF scale was changed. I take it you feel 59% shows a noticeable deterioration in quality?

Also, what are your feelings on higher submes of 8 or 9? Not worth the time penalty?

Since this thread is based on the notion of using CABAC, let me ask: feelings on psy-trellis?

BTW, when was the last time anyone tested b-pyramid on the ATV? I wonder if it got enabled at some point...

I just tried the above settings with the addition of b-pyramid and the ATV restarted itself.

I think I need to do more testing. For HD Sources this may be fine, but for DVD Sources, so far my testing isn't favorable.
Also, what are your feelings on higher submes of 8 or 9? Not worth the time penalty?
Going to test this today.
Since this thread is based on the notion of using CABAC, let me ask: feelings on psy-trellis?
EDIT: Just re-read my post, my response here was irrelevant. That said, I've been using SVNs so long, I don't remember how things looked before. :o

I'll run a few chapters and see...

Thats funny! Same thing use to happen with quick pans /w too high bitrates.

Imo, subme of 6 looks awfully good, and is ridiculously close in size for a full length feature film as subme 8 with a pretty decent speed benefit (almost 4fps depending on my source). I am using subme 6.

Sidenote: been doing some reading up on nvidia's TrueVideo and the GeoForce 7300 Go video gpu on the atv. Its interesting and I think provides some clues as to how apple is able to decode pretty decent h.264 with such a relatively meek main cpu. As TrueVideo is programmable and Apple obviously has access to the api, I suspect that could have something to do with how they improve h.264 decoding with software updates (note that as of atv 2 the max specs for h.264 exceed standard mpeg4). At first, I thought that the h.264 decoding on the 7300 was cavlc only, and handed off cabac to the main cpu, but now I am seeing evidence suggesting otherwise. Again, just a sidenote.

No...psy-trellis isn't on by default. Psy-RDO is on by default. Psy-trellis requires cabac and trellis 1 or 2 and for you to specify psy-rd=1,1 (the first 1 is psy-rdo, it's on by defaul, while the second is psy-trellis, and it's off by default).

Just what I needed to know (I guess my previous remarks were relevant). I'll run some full encodes /w cabac=1:trellis=1:psy-rd=1,1 tonight.

BTW, have been running some 59% / 62% subme 9 tests. Will try to post report tonight when I get home from work.

Okay I understand I am out of bounds on this thread here, but I have to share this in support of better HB encoding to the atv accepted format (h.264 mpeg4) in contrast to "hacking" your atv to playing all formats using mplayer, vlc or whatever. Even the developers of the newer "Boxee" admit that since they have no real clue as to how apple is able to use the nvidia gpu to accelarate h.264, they suffer in performance. So, threads like this are imho the best source of how to access all an atv has to offer in terms of the best quality video experience that can be had on the AppleTV by encoding your source to the maximum that the stock atv software/hardware can play natively .

Please carry on with your regularly scheduled programming...

I know, I promise this sooner, but this little thing called life....

HB Version: r1886
Movies: Baby Mamma & Hellboy 2

Quality 0.59 vs 0.62:

Image
0.59

Image
0.62

I *thought* I could tell the difference by 59% having less color detail. I've been looking at the two so much, I can't tell now...So I will leave it to you.

No trellis vs. trellis=1:psy-rd=1,1

The bottom image includes trellis=1:psy-rd=1,1. While you can tell that there is more detail, you also get a significant bloat. I this case 1.72GB vs 2.29GB.

Can I tell a difference? Yes.

Is it material with frames in motion? Not in the least.

Just my $0.02 - no way would I accept the additional increase in bitrate/filesize for details I can only see by tweening between still frames. If I were that anal-retentive, I'd consider MPEG-2 an abomination. (Oh, wait, that's right...I do. ;)

Yeah, I think I'm with you there. I don't think I can overlook the bloat.

Ok - well im back and have done losts of testing with the latest SVN's since.

The MKV bug still exists for me (and others) on a number of sources but thats not for this thread...

Two things ive found with latest settings and encodes.

Im not getting smooth fades at all. Most notiably white text fading in and out on a black background. Its as if Handbrake is droping lots of frames here...and the fade out is happening with 3 frames instead of 30...so it goes, white, grey, gone...very jerky.

All my DVDs are Pal material if that makes any diference, but I also noticed pans can be quite jerky, as if i had a NTSC based film or other - I know its not 24fps materal and maybe the original DVD is like that - but landscape pans im sure are made worse by the encodes.

The settings im using as as follows.

For DVD...

Code: Select all

bframes=6:ref=3:mixed-refs=1:subq=8:me=umh:no-fast-pskip=1:direct=auto:merange=24:vbv-maxrate=4900:vbv-bufsize=3500:weightb=1
Im still use maxrate because i found encodes were not as good for me without it. I was testing between Dynaflashs original advanced settings and the new advanced settings he created around the time of snapshot 2 - and i was getting better results for the same file size with snapshot 3 using the original settings. So i adapted them a bit and came u wp with the above.

Subq can be anywhere between 7 and 9, depending on how good the source material is and how much i care about it to dedicate more encoding time for it within my library.

For proper HD (not compresed HDTV) material im using

Code: Select all

ref=3:mixed-refs=1:bframes=6:direct=auto:no-fast-pskip=1:me=umh:subq=8:analyse=all:vbv-maxrate=4800:vbv-bufsize=3500:cabac=0
Yes yes, i know cabac is not supposed to be off in this thread - but tough...for REAL Hd sources it just doesn't play smoothly enough. HDTV its fine - but if i use a 1080p blu-ray source unless i put the CRF slider at about 56% it will not play back smoothly on my ATV and 56% gives me a grainy worse than SD result.

The trouble with the above settings is it still maxes out the bitrate - and even though im streaming over a 300mbps Wireless N network with my ATV connected to the router by ethernet it still stuggles to play these files unless they are synced to the hard drive which is a shame. Its hit a miss though, some play fine - others are just too bulky to stream - maybe cabac would help with this - and maybe cabac with subq 9, a lower max rater and a setting of 58% would be the happy medium between the two.

But for me, to Dynaflash and others the question would be - how or if, do you get your white writing to fade like source?

perhaps you could raise quantizer minimum. also, why not adaptive bframes?

What exact code settings would you recommend as a starting point with them cvk?

I'll modify my HD setting and try a couple of encodes with it see what happens.

Dynaflash,

I was with you on Snapshot 3 and having pretty good luck with the settings you were using at the time. Just noticed that we now have 0.9.3 out, so of course I couldn't wait and took the official release update! In catching up on postings in the last 3 weeks or so, it would seem that you've changed your recommended advanced atv settings lately, based on new findings.

So, kind sir, what are your current settings that you are finding the greatest quality with for standard DVD's? And would these be relevant to 0.9.3 or only older versions?

Thanks as always for the pioneering work.

Dynaflash - An additional question when you respond back to "brakestands" can you set "psy-rd=1,1" using the mac gui or is it a cli option only, (sorry if this is a stupid question, but I have not seen much on it expect bits and pieces in the forum, since I do not believe the wiki has been updated to explain it for us - boy I hope I did not miss it when I looked).

Also thank you and everybody else on the release of 0.93 - all you folks are the best.

Just add "psy-rd=1,1" (w/o the "" marks) to the x264 options string in the advanced tab. you'll see others in there, too; just separate them with a colon (:)

With HB 0.9.3 and 62% crf I am using:

Code: Select all

ref=3:mixed-refs=1:bframes=3:weightb=1:direct=auto:no-fast-pskip=1:me=umh:subq=6:analyse=all:b-adapt=2
So far have not had any stuttering at all on atv 2.3 synced. Decent balance of speed and file size. For my part I feel its pretty much sd dvd source transparent. Could probably play with 60 - 61 % on the crf if you want, but for me this has been solid. Use it every day.

After a six month (or so) sabattical of encoding I saw that 0.9.3 was released and had to try it out. Of course Cav is leading the charge still! :D I'm having to get caught back up on the encoding lingo again.

Using dynaflash's settings directly above I was greatly impressed with the output on my ATV; file sizes seemed to also be about 20-25% smaller. But the thing that really surprised me was the end to stuttering. Using the "old problem child" of HP:OotP and the first scene, 0.9.3's encode was stutter free. Same response with the crane fight scene in Casino Royale, previously a trouble spot with my earlier encodes.

I'm going to run some more encodes tonight (and screenshots) but the only issue I *think* I'm having are what appear to be very slightly washed out colors, similar to what Cav noticed above. Any ideas on where to start there?

For reference I stream to my ATV over 802.11N from my WHS NAS and a shared iTunes datastore.

Oh, and I also saw the not-so-smooth transition that djdeejay saw (HPOotP scene 1 goes from black to white in opening) on my encode. Only slightly jarring if you know to look for it.

Gonna have to look for it. Nothing that jumped out at me. But will check it out. Maybe a side effect of psy-rdo ?

Man Handbrake is the best! With all the improvements in 0.9.3 IMHO there is no better encode tool.
My settings that have been rock solid since just after PsyRDO hit the svn and still are with 0.9.3

CRF 64 (A little high, but works for me)
psy-rd=1,1:ref=3:mixed-refs=1:bframes=6:b-adapt=2:direct=auto:no-fast-pskip=1:me=umh:subq=7:analyse=all

I stream all my movies to my apple tv from my 1 TB timecapsule and they are smooth as silk. I have done a lot of testing turning on the old trellis and have found that it slows down the encode and adds no quality that I can see. I use to use VBV to keep the bit rates under control, but have found that it is no longer necessary. High action scenes no longer stutter, at least none that I have encoded.
