Hi Everyone

One thing I have noticed after several days of playing with HandBrake...

When I try to backup a PAL DVD and select the Frame Rate as "Same as Source" it doesn't actually take notice of this. According to VLC the generated h.264 mp4 file was 3.055767

Now it seemed to play nicely on my PC and copying onto my PS3 worked fine and looked fine.

However, when streaming it using Twonky it was extremely choppy no matter on quality/file size.

When I realised the frame rate was wrong I set it manually to 25 and it now streams perfectly.

Oh also, not sure I understand the stuff about AC3 when generating a h264 file.

My DVD is 5.1 and my amplifier does not accept ACC. So AC3 5.1 is my only option.

Is this a limitation of HandBrake? I have produced files with 5.1 sound that works but not sure if it was HandBrake or DVDx.

I don't understand my there is no options to alter the sound within HandBrake. Is there a plugin?

Well, I personally don't understand the question. Yes, HandBrake supports generating AC3-in-MP4, as far as it can be as a God-awful hack. Does your particular playback device support this? We have no idea.

Nice!

I've successfully re-encoded two MKV movies to m4v containers with 720p H.264, AAC and AC3.
Added some tags and subtitles with Muxo, sweet.

I tried four others but they all crashed in the first pass (using Two pass, turbo first pass).
I used the Deux Six Quatre with 3000 kbs bitrate and Pyramidical B-frames disabled.

Anyways, I'm glad to see these snapshots as VishualHub closed down.
The HB encodes have much better quality at lower bitrates (VH using 5000 kb/s).

Sorry, to expand I am producing an mp4 file from my dvd which I put on a LinkStation running Twonky. I want to stream it to my ps3 with the best quality possible (max 1gb/hour file size), including 5.1 sound.

AFAIK the PS3 doesn't support AC3 in MP4 but does support AAC 5.1 (if you connect the PS3 trough HDMI to an AV Receiver).

Hi, and thanks for your comments.

Not sure I'm following entirely. Firstly after creating an mp4 file with h264 and AC3 it plays on the PS3 and says it's 2 channel. VNC 0.9.2 also says 2 channel.

I tried AAC but outputting that seems to not play through my amp. When I go into settings and untick AAC it plays but only with 2 channels. However on my PC VNC does confirm it has 6 channels.

I've created an mp4 file recently (not sure what program I used) and it's says it uses avc1 and mp4a. It's 6 channel sound.Just remembered that doesn't play on the PS3

This is what I was hoping to re-create.

I've just created another file using HandBrake and I've got 6 channel sound but have had to do it by creating an avi file with XVID and a52 codecs.

Okay sorry there are a few things wrong/missing on the previous post...

Using HandBrake svn 1797 I am trying to stream hi-res great sounding movies from my Twonky server to my PS3 but want a max of 1GB/hour file size.

I have tried mp4 file with h264 and AC3 but only get 2 channel sound via optical out of PS3 (PS3 and VLC say it's two channel).
I have tried avi file with XVID and AC3 but again only 2 channel sound.

I have tried mp4 file with h264 and AAC and it VLC says it's 5.1 and so does my PS3 but no sound via optical cable to my amp. When I turn off AAC in the sound options of my PS3 it then plays through the amp but only 2 channels.

The only file that I've got to work with 5.1 was one that I don't even know what I used to do it. Either DVDx, HandBrake or SUPER. I've tried all of them but came back to HandBrake. Anyway, VLC shows the details as XVID and a52. Just retried DVDx and just 2 channel output so I guess SUPER gave me 5.1

Problem I keep getting is jerky playback when streaming. Strange because some stuff is fine (even a hi-def independent movie that I downloaded - and paid for) but some of my stuff produced is jerky even in low res. I thought it was to do with frame rates but some of them are 25fps but still not smooth unless I save it on the PS3 HDD.

Any ideas?

Interestingly when I select AAC DPL2 I get a smooth video playback on my PS3 but selecting the 6 channel option makes playback jerky (unless saved on its HDD). That's with all video settings the same. So the question is whether streaming 6 channel sound (even if it's then down sampling when using AAC) is feasible. The file produced that will go through to my stereo as 5.1 is jerky so perhaps it's not worth persuing.

While converting an mkv file with DTS sound I noticed the activity log was making a 120-138ms audio sync adjustment on each frame. The resulting h264 file was unwatchable. The video was fine but the soundtrack pulsed from silence to LOUD and when it was decipherable it was apparent it was not from the same scene.
I assume this was a problem with the DTS, which is something I'm not sure Handbrake was intended to support. It did encode properly using VisualHub. (Of course, I prefer Handbrake from my BeOS days.)

Stop posting bugs here; follow the directions at the top of the snapshot page and create a new topic in the bugs section of the forum, including all of the necessary information.

Will all of you please stop using this thread to fish for support? The only reason you should be posting here is to ask questions about the changes in the snapshot. The download page clearly tells you how to go about reporting bugs, and the first post makes it quite blatant that there is no tech support for the snapshots.

Support for M2V sources?

Post by Sutekh »

Does the new build support M2V sources? I ask as I have tried a couple, and while the log analyses the file okay, no valid source is found. If indeed M2V sources are supported I will make a new thread in the support section with log file attached. Cheers.

Under things to fix:
- Constant Quality Rate preset probably needs a lower quality level (60% - 55%)

Does this mean that this snapshot gives the same quality at a lower percentage CQR when compared to a previous snapshot/build? I assume that this snapshot improves/optimizes CQR performance. So a manual fix would be to lower my CQR value (ex I used 62% with snapshot 2 but should use 58% with snapshot 3)? I will test out some lower rates just want to know if I am understanding correctly.

To reiterate jbrjake's request, please stop fishing for support in this thread! The only feedback we're looking for are properly submitted bug reports as outlined on the snapshot download page.

job4031 - Known issue... the CRF curves on the current x264 are quite different from the version bundled with HB 0.9.2. Expect most of the presets to be tweaked prior to the next stable release.

Sutekh - While Handbrake can read an M2V file, it ignores any track without audio. This behaviour may be changed in future.

TedJ & jbrjake,

Thank you for the clarification, and to all the developers thank you for your continued work and improvement of this extraordinary tool. I have been getting some great all-in-one builds for my iPod touch w/ component output that also look good on my Macbook.

not a bug for fishing for support, but a question...

"Universal input support, utilizing libavcodec from the FFmpeg project for decoding non-MPEG-2 video"

when I read this I got excited, as I would love to use Handbrake on my Photo-JPEG captures from my Blackmagic Intensity card that captures from HDMI out of my Dish PVR. Handbrake opens the files, but in the preview the colors are buggy, it looks like the reds are shifted downscreen or something, and when compressed the results are the same.

Trying to understand if this is something that the 'universal input support' should do, and this is a bug, or if it's something it's not designed to do. If I need to save it to some lossless codec before feeding it to Handbrake, I will still be one happy camper - but just need to know what file formats are supported.

Thanks

HandBrake currently only handles content that's in its native yuv420 planar layout. Color space conversion is on van's agenda.

I just encoded a video from non-copy-protected DVD with this snapshot, and something went way wrong.

The video is 1hr 14 min in length. I used the Ipod Hi-Rez preset, and only made a couple of changes:

1) I added chapter names, 31 of them!

2) Instead of the ABR setting of 1500 that is default with the preset, I changed it to CQ60.

3) I changed the audio abr from 160 to 128.

4) As the original video is interlaced, I set it for slow deinterlace. (I read in your documentation that the fast deinterlacing produces bad results, and that "slower" is much much slower.)

Nothing else changed from preset.

The result--a video--about 150 MB, video bitrate average 178kbps, audio 96kbps. Frame rate 29.968.

The audio sounds fine. But there is actually no video at all! Just a still snapshot, from somewhere later in the video, that looks VERY interlaced, which one sees on the screen all the time! Never changes! I tried with a few different media players (including Quicktime Pro and VLC), and all had the same result!

I guess I'll probably uninstall it, and go back to .92. (Or, can one install the older over the newer version, without uninstalling first?) But I thought I should let you know about this. Or, is there some way I can change settings of this version, so that won't happen again?

Why on earth did you feel it was necessary to post a support question in the announcement thread??? The snapshot page gives you specific directions on how to report problems. I have half a mind to delete your post outright, but I'll be nice and leave it so you can copy it elsewhere... but don't be surprised if it isn't removed before the end of the night.
