5.1 Surround Sound for a PS3 file?

Post by Spops »

Are you able to get 5.1 surround sound using handbrake and putting the file into PS3 format? In the past that I have done it I have only gotten stereo.

Thanks in advance.

6 channel AAC if you PS3 is connected to your av receiver using HDMI and you receiver takes 6 channel pcm as input format.

Maybe AC3 in AVI works but I don't know.

My PS3 is connected to my receiver using a Optical Toslink Cable. I also only have a 5.1 system so 5.1 is the best that I could get.

If you use TOSLINK, your only options are Stereo or Dolby Digital 5.1 AC-3; multichannel AAC won't work.

The problem here is, that AC-3 has just recently been added to the MP4 specification, and the PS3 is not (yet?) able to use it. But the PS3 can also play AVCHD, where AC-3 multichannel sound is a valid option and supported by the PS3. In order to get this to work, you must place your video and audio inside a MPEG2 Transport Stream container (a .m2ts file). I'm doing this, and it works great on the PS3 and gives me 5.1 over TOSLINK.

Here's how to do it: Use handbrake to encode you video in Matroska (.mkv) format (e.g. the "Film" preset), for audio select AC3 so the audio stream is directly copied inside the MKV without any re-encoding.

Then take the video and audio stream out of the MKV container and repack it inside a m2ts container. This can be done automatically by the freeware program "mkv2vob". Just change the default setting from VOB output to M2TS output. Then select your MKV file, and after a few minutes you have a M2TS file that you can play on the PS3.

Hi there

I've just used this program and find that the files produced don't include a time stamp (if that's what you call it).

The PS3 and VLC both can't read the length of the movie plus fast forward and rewind both do not work.

Have you got any solutions to fix this?

I wonder if the PS3 2.50 firmware will include AC-3 support within MP4.

Thanks

Ok, I have the same setup and was going to make a new post but maybe I should just reply to this thread..

What I have eventually discovered that is working flawlessly for me is to do the following:

Use handbrake in either Constant Quality Rate or Deux Six Quatre ( I like these for quality) but PS3 preset should also work.
Change the save type to .mkv and make sure that the Audio Encoder is set to AC3 regardless of which preset you use...

Then I use mkv2vob and turn the .mkv back into a VOB. Works great and I get my 5.1 surround even with the center channel sound etc.

I read another thread that said to use mkv2vob and change the save type to m2ts but my PS3 was not happy with it.. To tell the truth I did not play around a ton with that extension but VOB works like a dream.

Now I am not endorsing any of the products specifically but here is what I am using from start to finish...

Windows Server 2008 running
DVDFab HD Decrypter 5 to rip DVDs
Handbrake 0.9.2 (I have snapshot 3 just haven't installed it yet)
and TVersity to stream my iTunes library and DVDs to my PS3

PS3 is HDMI for video and TOSlink for audio (my receiver doesn't have HDMI in :( )

I hope this helps a few people in the same boat as me. I actually grabbed what I believe to be the best parts of both Constant Quality Rate and Deux Six Quatre and made my own custom encoding options which I just batch script.. Here is the batch script I am using if anyone cares...

"C:\Program Files\Handbrake\HandBrakeCLI.exe" -i "C:\Users\SCOOBY\Documents\DVDFab\FullDisc\300\VIDEO_TS" -o "C:\Users\SCOOBY\MKV holding\300.mkv" -e x264 -E ac3 –p –q 0.65 -b 1600 -2 -T -x ref=5:mixed-refs:bframes=3:bime:weightb:filter=-2,-2:b-rdo:b-pyramid:me=umh:subme=7:trellis=1:analyse=all:8x8dct:no-fast-pskip -D 1 --markers="C:\Users\SCOOBY\AppData\Local\Temp\2\chapters.csv" -v

Again this is basically Deux Six Quatre with some parts of Constant Quality Rate in it.. And yes, you would need to change your source and output directories as necessary...

Let me know if you have any questions..

This is due to a bug in Handbrake 0.92. Read the "no picture on ps3" thread for more information - some files that are generated by HB will not work on the PS3, and for these files mkv2vob reports an error when you try to remux them.

There is a workaround for this problem. Read my posts in the above mentioned thread.

I created a custom preset based on Apple TV. Video file type MKV H264, 2500 kbps with 2 pass encoding. AC3 audio. I then convert it with MKV2VOB (into a mpg). It will play on the PS3 and VLC media player with the surround intact. Quicktime won't open it though, meaning no joy on iPods or iTunes.

The new Universal preset in svn1913 works very well, but it won't play the AC3 on my PS3 (though it should be encoded as a second audio track). The audio quality is still fairly good. This is one of the only presets I have found which works in my iPod classic, iTunes, PS3, and anything else I want with decent quality. The only thing I'd like to add is the ability to use the AC3 it records as a second track as the primary when playing on my PS3. This is the preset I'm using now because it may not do everything perfectly, but at least it does everything fairly well.

I have also tried Toast 9 for video conversion (after using FairMount to copy the Video TS folder to my desktop). The files were larger, quality not any better, and they weren't compatible with my iPod. The bitrates for Toast versus Handbrake when playing through my PS3 were roughly the same for the video and Toast had lower bitrates for the audio (for both the Universal and the custom settings).

Interestingly enough, the PS3 does support playing MP3 Surround through the TOSLINK. I don't know what software or what workflow would mux this into a video file that the PS3 could use, though.

After a giant amount of research on converting a 480p DVD into H.264 with 5.1 audio for playback on PS3, my personal vote is that H.264 with AC3 5.1 in a M2TS is the way to go. It sounds like this is purely for wider compatability with existing audio equipment (optical). Although I am still a plain old stereo person, I would still like to be able to play in 5.1 at some point in the future so I do not want to be limited to Pro Logic II audio for all of the conversion work I am doing at the moment. I would love it if HandBrake incorporate end-to-end DVD to H.264/AC35.1/M2TS conversion in their GUI, then it would be idiot proof (i.e. even I could do it).

Also, does anyone have any ideas/tips on including "optional" subtitles in H.264/AC35.1 files for playback on PS3 (like I can do with 'DiVx Converter' which creates a .divx file (comes with DiVx Pro). Those subtitles can be turned on and off on the PS3 remote. At the present time, subtitles added to mp4 files created by HandBrake are not optional at playback time, so forced subtitles is the only feature of any value on English soundtrack movies (I'm assuming we all speak English here). MP4 with 5.1 AAC does seem like a great concept as long as you use HDMI to your amplifier (not optical) for the gigantic PCM 5.1 bandwidth meeded for the sound. I don't know much about amplifiers and if any support (oops, I should have said sport) AAC natively yet.

I'm also wondering if the release of DiVx 7 will change anything (includes H.264) and if that will give us some idiot proof options, like their existing DiVx Converter (so I can do it too, LOL) for our obsessive PS3 playback discussion.

We're all looking for that magic-all-in one file that does what a DVD or Blu-Ray disk does and I think the reason it doesn't really exist is because then it would be "easy" and all comercial ventures would be unsuccessful as a result. So far the only magic file format I have is the .divx created by DiVx Creator, but the limit is MP3 stereo, which for movies is not what 'us the people' want. :(

PS for anyone who talks about MKV and what it can do 4 u on your PC... from what I understand, it is a suitcase, and you can put whatever you want into it. What it doesn't do for you is give you a 'standard' like what we see with .divx, .mp3, .m2ts, .aac, blah, blah, blah. Thank you and good night! :-)

Here's the template script I've decided to use. Just insert your values for 'indir' and 'movie' and your location of HandBrakeCLI.exe and tsMuxeR.exe. This works nicely including fast forward without audio sync issues. I still need to test forced subtitles but didn't find a movie to verify the options I've used below yet (-U -F -N eng)

@echo off
cd /d c:\
set indir="C:\SOME_DVD_RIP_DIR"
set movie=The Full Movie Name With Spaces

set basename=C:\%movie%
set outfile="%basename%.mkv"
set metafile="%basename%.meta"
set outfile2="%basename%.m2ts"

echo indir=%indir%
echo outfile=%outfile%
echo metafile=%metafile%
echo outfile2=%outfile2%
echo **********************************

echo Using %indir% to create %outfile%
"C:\Program Files\Handbrake\HandBrakeCLI.exe" -i %indir% -o %outfile% -e x264 -E ac3 -p -q 0.65 -b 1600 -2 -T -x ref=5:mixed-refs:bframes=3:bime:weightb:filter=-2,-2:b-rdo:b-pyramid:me=umh:subme=7:trellis=1:analyse=all:8x8dct:no-fast-pskip -D 1 --markers -U -F -N eng
echo **********************************

echo Creating %metafile%
echo MUXOPT --no-pcr-on-video-pid --new-audio-pes --vbr --vbv-len=500 > %metafile%
echo V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC, %outfile%, insertSEI, contSPS, track=1, lang=eng >> %metafile%
echo A_AC3, %outfile%, track=2, lang=eng >> %metafile%
echo **********************************
echo Creating %outfile2%
E:\Desktop\tsMuxeR.exe %metafile% %outfile2%
echo **********************************
del /q %outfile%
del /q %metafile%

Many thanks to Phorest for his HandBrakeCLI.exe 'Constant Quality Rate and Deux Six Quatre custom encoding options'

EDIT: I've starting using the following for the H.264 encoding as it's faster:

"C:\Program Files\HandBrake\HandBrakeCLI.exe" -i %indir% -o %outfile% --crop 0:0:0:0 -e x264 -E ac3 -p -b 1000 -2 -T -x level=41:me=umh -v

 ############ End of Log ##############

ok well im not sure whats going on and why my other posts aren't showing up but i read the must read section and now posted my activity log. Basically, i tried every setting the above posters suggested and the best results i've been able to re produce with HB and mkv2vob is a bazillion artifacts showing on my ps3,(and VLC and WMP11) but the ps3 does show that the vob file is dolby digital. However, its really messed up like i said. If anyone would be able to help me by maybe posting screenshots of what they did EXACTLY to be able to stream/put on the ps3's harddrive an encoded file that was able to keep ac-3 dolby digital surround sound. If this is a repost then im sorry but this forum is diffrent than other ones im used to.

Re: 5.1 Surround Sound for a PS3 file?

Post by pogues »

I've been researching this a while and tried lots of different combinations of settings. I will post some steps below to help Mac users get 5.1 audio on their PS3s with little effort. PC users could probably use the same methods described below but with programs developed for the PC.

1. You first need to decode your source material. If you want to backup and convert DVDs you own and save them on your Mac for viewing on your PS3, begin with a program such as Mac the Ripper and demux the audio and video into 2 separate streams. For most of your DVDs you can do this without a problem. After analyzing your disc click the mode tab and choose "demux", then click the streams you wish to demux. In most cases i just chose the video file and the 6 channel english audio file. The audio files are labeled for easily identifying which stream you want to use. After the program demuxes you will have a folder that contains a .m2v and your AC3 audio file.

2. Next you will need FFMPEGX to bring the separate streams back together into one container (muxing). Open the FFMPEGX program and choose the "Tools" tab. Select the "video" button and choose the newly created .m2v from step 1, then select the audio 1 button and choose the AC3 file that was created from step 1. Under options Mux as: DVD, Author as DVD (VIDEO_TS) should be checked. The split mpg should be unchecked.

3. In FFMPEGX After the file is done muxing, choose the "summary" tab and drag the newly created .mpg file into the "From" drag and drop area. It will show your Video and Audio files. For Audio it should show a 5 channel audio stream.

4. Next select the Video tab in FFMPEGX and choose MPEG4 [.AVI] (ffmpeg). For now leave the settings untouched. You can go back and mess around later if you want to create a higher quality video. Then select the Audio tab and under Audio Codec choose "Passthrough". Audio Parameters should be set to Audio bitrate: 448 kbit/s, Sampling: 48000 Hz, Channels: 5.1, Mode: CBR.

5. Click Encode. When it's done you will have a file ready to stream to your PS3 with video and 5.1 audio.

I am using a dual core 2.8 ghz iMac, Mac OS 10.5.4 to prepare the files. To stream audio and video to my PS3 I am using MediaLink which is a great program and works really well as a media server. Lastly I have my PS3 hooked up to my 1080p TV with an HDMI cable and the audio going to an Onkyo receiver via a Toslink cable.

I really hope this help some of you out there who were having trouble with this. I only had one of my DVDs give me a problem but I believe there was a problem with the audio source on the disc. All other tests have worked flawlessly.

This is a follow-up to my previous post with what I think is the best was to convert a DVD. I have be doing this in Vista with scripting. My objective is to playback on PS3 with native Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack but the advantages of H.264 compresson and for the file to have a future use (possibly AVCHD authoring) for playback on any Blu-Ray player. There are 2 scripts... a parent and a sub-script. This process will convert to a .m2ts with 1250 bitrate H.264 and AC3 (Dolby Digital 5.1) pass-through. You need Handbrake and tsmuxr. It may not be perfected in that I run into movies with audio sync isseus about 30% of the time and a couple that still have some interlacing artifacts, but I am using it on the other 70% of rips with 100% success. Global options are stored in convertmovies.cmd and movie specific options are specified by the variable %extra% in masterscript.cmd. This is useful when the endode will vary from one movie to another, ex: which title. Also, the file can be streamed without transcoding from a PC using a software like TVersity. There is also a new DLNA server written specifically for PS3 which I think is going to dominate. Basically this guy was fed up with TVersity and wrote his own server in Java for PS3. It supports movie thumbnails (not animated) and works very well... possibly better than TVersity. You can find it here http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/ and here http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/. I think that our collective, obsessive work towards perfectionism is starting to pay off! LOL. Let me know if you need any help.

also, it is possible to do a MF rip in MtR, then use either MPEG Streamclip or DVision3 or DVD2oneX to create a single VOB that will play/ stream 5.1 on a PS3.
it is also possible to do a single VOB rip (title or chapter) in MtR that will play 5.1 on the ps3. but for some unknown reason, the HDD where the file is stored must be fat32. a quirk that even the team at MtR found difficult to understand/ explain.
the DVD2onex method only takes a few minutes although the file sizes are just under the 4gb mark.

and of course, i want a smaller files that play 5.1 on my ps3 and atv!

I found the easy way use HB
format:AVI file
video codec: MPEG-4 (Xvid)
go to audio and subs
English (AC3)(5.1ch) AC3 Passthru
this worked fine on a MTR file on a mac
I did a full disk rip then chose just the feature and audio track I wanted
