I realized my problem - trying to download to AVI. When I do it to MP4 it works fine...but I am going to convert to FLV. Has anyone had issues with downloading to AVI? If I can't figure it out I suppose I'll look for an MP4 -> FLV/AVI/MOV converter.

Any hope of handbrake itself actually dealing with these DVDs directly? Telling people "go pay for a beta release of X, and then run Y, and THEN you can finally use OUR program...." ... Rather exasperating.

Might Have a Solution for Windows & Zero Cell

Post by myronaiii »

THIS IS A POSSIBLE FIX FOR ZERO CELL ISSUES ON PC:

I couldn't get The Prestige (good movie by the way) to rip, and I'm pretty sure it was a Zero Cell issue. I kept messing around with things, and I finally got it to work.

1. Used RipItForMe (and DVD Decrypter) to put the VOB files for the movie on my hard drive (I transfered the movie and only the movie).

2. Then I ran FixVTS, which seemed to clear the zero cells.

3. Used Handbrake to Rip from the "fixed" VOB files on my hard drive.

It worked once, but I'll try it on another movie on the Zero Cell list sometime soon.

No.

Not only would this put HandBrake on shaky legal ground in several countries, it would also put the application developers in a position of having to research and defeat the numerous new types of DVD protection that appear monthly.

Should a shared library ever appear in the open source world that deals with this, such as there is for CSS support, we'll consider inclusion, assuming it is well-supported and frequently updated (but even then, it would require very frequent releases of HandBrake to keep up).

In short - this is not the purvey of HandBrake, any more so than playback of content is. There are other tools far better suited to the task that are readily available. Use them. If convenience is your aim, I believe there is a kernel-level transparent solution available for the Mac similar to AnyDVD on Windows, though I don't know the name.

Hopefully once MTR 3 is released it will be able to handle this better than it does now. The current 3.x release is a pay Beta and I suspect the author is working diligently to fix issues as they crop up with certain DVDs.

MTR 3b r14d is out and is awsome. I have no probs ripping any Sony, Lionsgate or anything else. These companies are using ArCCoSS and RipGuard protection which jams Mediafork and Fast DVDCopy. MTR tells you to do a Main Feature Only extraction. After that, do NOT touch the finished file. Just use Toast 7 or 8, Popcorn or DTOX to compress if needed and burn to disk. Under older ways, you needed to use DTOX to remove the 0 cells, but not with r14c or d. You can also take the ripped file and use MediaFork with no problems. This works great and all you need to do to get a copy of MTR is donate $35. That is not a lot considering that is less than the cost of 2 movies on DVD. MediaFork works awsome with no crashing on these finished files. There, I said my piece. I just get tired of people complaining about a few bucks when people put a ton of their time into making this stuff work.

I would add a caveat to the above. r14 is not perfect. To date I have been unable to get a good Video_TS folder that MediaFork/HandBrake can rip.

I feel kind of stupid asking, but can anyone help me out with ripping The Grudge 2? I read through all the zero cell threads, but I can't get MacTheRipper because when I registered for the forum, it didn't work, and I can't get my paypal account working anyways. I'm also so unfamiliar with ripping DVD's that I don't really understand many other solutions. Sorry if that's a dumb request.

Is Casino Royale a zero cell DVD? I can't seem to get it to work with either Handbrake .7.1 or MediaFork .8.0b1

Grudge 2 definitely needs to be run through MTR first. HandBrake will not encode this dvd by itself.

I couldn't rip Casino Royale, either (trying Handbrake 0.7.1 and MTR 6.2.2). Never heard of the zero cell thing, or Sony disc thing until this.

*grumps*

Dunno if it's Zero Cell - but there are 99 tracks, and the junk seems to be limited to the first chapter. I started a chapter 2 - end rip/encode - but had to leave for work. Will check the result tonight.

I also note that there are a lot of movies in the original post that I didn't have any problems with, AFAIK (though I never sat down to watch them again on my mini).

Can check and confirm if it is desired. 'Till then, looking for another solution...

Cheers.

If there are 99 tracks, you are dealing with advanced protection. About the only thing that can save you on a Mac right now is bleeding-edge versions of MTR. This is not a HandBrake issue.

No, no. I understand - no criticism of Handbrake was intended. I think I understand what it is - and what it is not.

If this thread is to list movies that have funky protection that Handbrake does not deal with - I'm just confirming for someone that I had the same trouble with Casino Royale as they did.

My attempts to isolate where it's getting tripped up were merely for curiosity's sake.

Understanding the problem, and that 99 tracks indicate something nefarious - it does further pique my curiosity that I have ripped and encoded other DVDs with Handbrake 0.7.1, some with 99 tracks, and some on the list in the first post of this thread. They seem okay, contrasting with "Casino Royale" whose problems were quite obvious (encoding aborted soon in, small file size, audio and video unsynchronized).

But again - when comparing the scores:

Handbrake: 200+ (>80 movies, >125 TV episodes)
Sony: 1

It's clear (to me) who the problem is. ;>

Both flics rip perfect with MTR r14d Movie Only extraction. After movie only extraction, just use Media fork and all will be well. I have done both.

I couldn't either. It ran for like 3 hours with a 2.33 GHz processor and didn't work once it was fully ripped.

At this point, everyone here might be well served to bookmark the MTR forums, as they tend to list trouble movies and workarounds for them.
http://www.ripdifferent.com/phpbb2/viewforum.php?f=26

For instance, you will see threads right after the stickies regarding Casino Royale.

Please consider the MTR -> Handbrake workflow as standard operating procedure as HB does not deal at all with any forms of advanced copy protection and is not likely to in the near future. HB's main focus is encoding.

In fact, if you are on a mac, and do not use the latest beta mtr (which at this point requires a donation) you will probably need to use an MTR -> DVD2onex -> HandBrake workflow to remove any zero cells (2.66 does not remove them, the newest mtr beta does).

This is the unfortunate result of the latest and greatest coming out of Hollywood.

Sony Columbia Tristar

Post by ponch »

Monster House, Open Season, RV and I fear any other movie from this company.

These are all Columbia Tristar movies. I haven't had any luck ripping these to my PSP. MTR 2.6.6 to DTOX did not work! Is there a workaround?

Thanks in advance,

ponch

Just a note - I used Handbrake 0.7.1 on an Intel Mac mini, and *was* able to rip/encode the following that are on the problem list:

Cars
Pirates of the Caribbean 2
The Devil Wears Prada

I did not use MTR.

All new sony movies have this new feature hidden in the first chapter of the movie... If you take that chapter out you can encode the rest of the movie using HB or MF, but if you do this you lose 5 or 10 minutes of the movie depending on how long the first chapter is.
