Lenght of time to copy a DVD?

Why does it take me 5-8 hours for my computer to decode and copy a movie to my computer? My computer has 1 g of ram, nothing else running when I do it, and its only about 2 years old. I am doing it to add to an iPhone. Does anyone one have a suggestion?

Depending on the settings you are using, that may not be atypical. You should really put some more details up...

5~8 hours is perfectly normal for a 2 year old machine.

In fact depending on the settings / time of source used encode times can vary from 20mins to 24+ hours.

You want faster encodes then you'll have to sacrifice quality. Try using Mpeg4 rather than H264

If you want it to go faster, you need a faster processer, such as the reason I use a quad core, memory just means you can run more things at once.
