program for avi to mp4?

Post by redraiderbum »

I have a bunch of old avi's and for more efficient streaming would like to move them to mp4; are there any such programs?

Linux, Unix, or Mac perferably. If there isn't anything for those, I have windows vista, but avoid using it cuz I hate it. I have no xp.

On the Mac you can use VisualHub (not free) or iSquint (free).

VH will convert almost anything to anything, but iSquint will only do to iPod format.

On the commercial side there is also ffmpegX, which I liked better than VisualHub. I had tried both and gotten the feeling that VisualHub tried to dictate my usage and the true gears (like all the fiddly settings of Handbrake) were well hidden, whereas ffmpegX was more like HandBrake.

Truly unfortunate that there is no Open Source project like HandBrake for this task, and that it's out of the scope of HandBrake...

VLC will transcode. The options are pretty limited (notably the granularity of bitrate).
