Understanding harware preset choices with Linux on Intel Skylake based CPU

I'm trying to understand what hardware I can use with a Xeon Gold 5120 processor under linux. (using latest HB of course)

I had to buy a 2nd hand Dell PowerEdge r640 to put up a virtualization platform.
I thought the AVX512 extension was the one to look for, and as far as my research goes Skylake were the first to support it.

I usually use HB on Macos M1 and the choices are clear, Preset->Hardware, H265 Apple Videotoolbox are the only option not grayed out.

But trying on Linux on this Xeon 5120 CPU, Preset->Hardware shows all the options as available.
After HB doc read, I gathered that I needed an Intel QuickSync hardware core, which of course isn't available on this CPU. Damn!

Before I realized that I tried a few things with Hardware QSV presets though, and selecting H265 QSV I was always getting AV1 video encoder selected. Which i still don't get. Remembering how slow it was on my M1 to encode with AV1 I just didn't even venture to try it out.

I went for a H265 QSV and manually replaced the default AV1 encoder with H265.
With a sample BRRip mkv of around 20Gb as source, the result was just hopeless: >1h with all 56cores available.

(it takes <20mn on a M1 MBP)

I remembered about AVX512 and check the proc:
"avx512f avx512dq avx512cd avx512bw avx512vl" is what's available on this Xeon 5120.
After a few web reading, but not HB doc which doesn't mention avx512, I tried to add "asm=avx512" in Additional Options.
Trying again and got a total time under 50mns. Better but still not worth the electricity spent on it.

Somehow, out of despair I tried again selecting QSV preset for H265 QSV, which encodes with AV1, and to my bewilderment, it took 8mns to encode the movie.

Great, really! AV1 encoded files are quite if not way smaller than H265.
But I just don't understand what's going on.

Can someone help me understand what happens with AV1? Why is it slow on my M1 and so fast on this Q3.2017 hardware? AVX512 is probably the answer but if someone knows more I'd be delighted to understand.

Second, why are all presets available on Linux and not on Mac? Is it an issue or is HB just not able to detect which hardware is available and match it to a preset?
On Macos, not only the preset is called Videotoolbox but the encoder as well bear the name. It makes it very clear.

Finally, I just don't know what's available for my hardware. What can I use?
It feels it doesn't matter the preset, all I have is AVX512, and it's fast with AV1 (maybe AV1 10BIT) but not with H265, period...

The Xeon has a significant core advantage over M1. Also, most encoders are not as well optimised for ARM CPUs so there is a bit of a penalty there.

AVX512 is not that important. It's a relatively minor performance improvement to use it where a given software encoder supports it. Intel Xeons in general are sub-optimal for HandBrake due to their low CPU clock speeds. It can cause bottlenecks. Unless your doing many encodes at once, it's more common to see CPU utilisation not maxing out on these chips.

It should only show encoders that are actually supported. I.e You should not be seeing QuickSync options on that hardware as it doesn't support it. If it's showing, it's falling back to a software encoder.

VideoToolbox is a wrapper around multiple hardware encoders. It's just how Apple decided to implement it. We don't have low level acecss to the hardware APIs like we do on Linux and Windows.

somehow I didn't receive any notification of this posts answers, I'll check forum options and spam box.
There must something more to this unexpected encoding speed in AV1, especially seeing M1 being so fast at h265 vs Xeon.

I definitely see all hardware encoding options available under Linux, something must be amiss.
And it doesn't explain why AV1 encoder is selected for H265 presets.

Will post logs tomorrow @rollin_eng, all I can say for now is that I used the Flatpak install for Linux.

Permissions might be different on Macos and Linux, but in any case read is enabled for all users.

What are you using to create your bd rips?

The first thing that you can try is to copy the rip to a local drive and see if you still have issues.

hum, it's awkward, I don't have enough space on this Linux VM to copy 20Gb.
I get BD rips from internet mostly :')

As I said, it works and has always worked properly on Macos.
