high speed shoots issues on TV (SONY XR75X90JAEP)

Post by tw_psycho »

Description of problem or question:
Recently I have started using stationary CPU to encode bluray videos to mkv. I am using Matroska H265 on high quality (RF=18) and "placebo" speed vs quality. Prevously I was using GPU on my laptop on different settings. The issue is when playing on the TV (SONY XR75X90JAEP) when there are faster shots the screen starts lagging - depending on the software - on kodi some artifacts, on VLC Media Player some other effects, but it's pretty similar - it doesn't play the movie fluently (only on fast-changins shoots)
I hadn't got that issue with GPU rendering and I haven't got that issue playing on PC. The file seems to be perfectly fine, but for some reason the TV cannot render it correctly.
My guess is that the temporary bitrate is too high to render it correctly.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.73 (x86_64)

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Ubuntu 23.10 and Android TV

I know I could have very time consuming session of trials and errors, to find where the issue happens, but perhaps you could give me some advice how to keep compatibility with Android TV without wasting so much time. I can give up compression levels and have bigger files or worse quality if necessary, just to keep compatibility with TV.

Could you please post your HB logs, instructions can be found here:

Use veryslow rather than placebo and set an HEVC level (e.g. level 4.0 for 1080p, level 5.0 for 4K or both), which should enable VBV automatically, IIRC.

More generally, set the level limit to what your playback environment supports.

It helped, but video size went up from 4GB to 14GB... (I set the level to 5.1 and very slow instead of placebo)

I guess I need to have some testing. I have just realised that I don't need to encode all movie, I can just take 1 minute for testing, which makes it much simpler.

Post the encoding log from that most recent encode so we can make specific suggestions for improvement.
