Wrong description of constant quality (CQ) setting when using VideoToolbox video encoder

Post by Vencanator »

Hello. I have noticed that the description of CQ setting while using VideoToolbox encoders is misleading.

There is written:
"Constant Quality varies bitrate to ensure visual quality remains relatively consistent throughout the video. Adjust the quality slider to the right to increase quality or to the left to decrease quality, in small increments of plus or minus 1-2. Recommended values for the x264 and x265 encoders are RF 18-28. Higher quality settings may produce extremely large files. x264 is lossless at RF 0."

It is misleading because of a few reasons.

1) While using VideoToolbox there is no RF setting but CQ setting.
2) While using VideoToolbox the best quality is at CQ setting set to 100 and the worst quality is at CQ setting set to 0 (therefore it's exactly the opposite of RF quality setting).
3) Recommended values does not apply to CQ setting.

Please would it be possible to update that description?

PS: The description is also misleading while using regular H.264 10-bit encoder, H.265 10-bit encoder or H.265 12-bit encoder, because it is possible to set RF below zero (such as -12 or -24), therefore information about lossless setting at RF 0 is obviously wrong. :

Set video encoder to H.264 (VideoToolbox), to H.265 (VideoToolbox) or to H.265 10-bit (VideoToolbox) and move pointer close to CQ quality slider, in that case the description cited above appears. :
