What if you do passthrough on the audio track instead of pointlessly reencoding it at a higher bitrate?

Thanks for the reply mduell. I would love to try that but I don't know how to do a passthru? Please advise.

I found it - I wasn't aware of that feature - running the encoding right now.

So the encoding with audio passthru works on my TV.

So I tried to encode a clip and change the audio from E-AC (which will not work on my TV) to AC. With 1.7, the audio didn't work on my TV (audio not supported). I used Handbrake 1.5.1 on the same clip with the same parameters and it worked fine on my TV. It appears to me that whenever the audio coding process is invoked, with 1.7.2, the audio becomes unsupported.

BTW, I've also tried AAC audio encoding but I get the same poor results (audio not supported) with 1.7.x.

I guess it's back to V1.6...

You could try encoding to m4v container and see if that works.

Thanks for the reply rollin_eng. When 1.7.3+ comes out and it doesn't work, I'll try your suggestion.

rollin_eng - I was just checking the container options within Handbrake and I didn't see m4v. Do you mean mp4 as they are very similar?

Yeah, they are the same. Why not just try it with 1.7.2?

From your failed log, the fallback encoder is av_aac. There is no fallback encoder on the sucessful log.

I'd guess that your TV doesn't understand AAC audio. If you opened the output files in MediaInfo, you'd be able to see which encoder was used on the audio.

Did the preset change between 1.6.1 and 1.7.2 or is this (unintentional) user error? AAC is not AC3.

The fallback encoder is not being used (nor is Auto Passthru). Look at the job configuration.

I also experience the same issue on a Bravia TV. Sometime after v1.6.1 the TV always reports "Audio is unsupported" on AAC streams. From some cursory tests of transocding the same source file using v1.6.1 and v1.7.1 the only difference I could see in the mkv tags was a field CODEC-INHERENT DELAY present in the output file encoded in 1.7.1. If I use mkv-toolnix to manually remove this field afterwards the file then played successfully on the Bravia TV.

Unfortunately I'm not sure where to go with this information but hoping that somebody knowledgeable enough will know how to fix it. :)
