Newbie struggling to convert Mov files on mac

Description of problem or question:
Hello folks. I have no programming ability, so I need very simple answers...I have mac quicktime video dating back to 2005. i have been trying to find a way to open it and or convert it for imovie. I looked at a few pay apps, even downloaded one on the 14 day free trial, and they didn't work.

The videos have this information for the Codecs (whatever those are): QuickTime Text, DV, Linear PCM, DV/DVCPRO - NTSC

I'm not sure if i need to change a setting on handbrake to make it work or if it just won't be possible. When I use handbrake, it doesn't work with the default settings.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):




HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

Handbrake 1.6.1


Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

MacBook Pro running macOs Monterrey version 12.6.8


HandBrake Activity Log ***required*** (see How-to get an activity log)

I will try to do this if it helps. I assume i am just missing something simple.

iMovie should open that MOV. Does it work in QuickTime Player?

It won't open in iMovie or in Quicktime. I'll post the logs a bit later today. thanks for your help.

I’m going off on a limb here, but I remember back in the day when iMovie would share a movie with iDVD, it would just send a reference .mov file that actually doesn’t contain any video information, but links back to the original iMovie edit and files. It’s possible that there’s nothing in those videos and if you deleted the reference material, there’s no video in there to reference.

I think that's part of it. I can see the reference material in the folders, too.

Another going off a limb here. It’s also possible, even if the reference material is there, that modern QuickTime, macOS can’t even use the referenced anymore. Let alone handbrake

References are still supported in AVFoundation, it's just that most apps are sandboxed, so they won't be able to automatically open the referenced files.

Thank you all for your help. I'll keep trying to figure something out. Ironically, I have a backup of the video I wanted restored the most. Unfortunately, its on 8mm reel to reel film. You think THIS video is outdated...but strangely it might be easier to give someone the original reels than to restore these digital copies.
