Output file too big after conversion from preset ATV

Post by evilparadime »

What will be the best settings for apple tv 4k, from which the output file is versatile to be played in all versions of apple tv. right now im using a modification of present atv 4k HEVC, and change audio eac3 a1: pass and a2: stereo aac 320kbps, fps as source rf 22, no crop. the input files range from 12gb to 24gb according to the availability online, but the output file comes out to be 6-8gb+. so any setting that can give me always around 4gb output file.

HandBrake version: latest

PC1: windows 11, PC2: Mac os13

You are going to have a LOT of trouble getting a 4K source that is over 2 hours long to be "under 4GB" without compressing it a LOT more than the ATV preset is intended for. You'll need to at least reduce the size to 1080p.

hi,
I get it. Can you tell me what you could suggest as the best possible settings to convert 4K large files to 2160p, while saving space and getting best result for apple TV 4K and older gen too.

2160p is 4K, so you're going to have to give up on having "full resolution" and keeping the size down. If you have a 4MB limit on file size, you'll have to get really jittery, or cut the save resolution to 1080p and let the player resize for you. Most players are pretty good at that.

Drop your encoder preset to slow or very slow, set the profile to auto. Then keep raising the RF until you get a size/quality you want.

You could also cut your AAC bitrate and convert eac3 to ac3 to save a little space.

Older generation AppleTVs (i.e. anything older than the AppleTV 4K) cannot do 2160p.

Argh, why didn't anyone point out that this should have been "4GB"? You're being too nice to me... :)

VCE is hardware encoder so it's low efficiency, I wouldn't use it for squeezing 4K films into 4GB.

x265 preset slow with an RF in the low-mid 30s is probably your best bet.

I tried with x264 vce present at rf or qc at 30. The file was still big but the clarity was decent. x265 im not doing as old atv 4k will not be able to read i guess and i have many generations in the house.

Any other suggestion of present i should try for atv ? av1 maybe.

All 4K ATV can do x265. Use x265 for low bitrate 4K.

Disable the decomb/deinterlace/detelecine since it's not doing anything here.
