AV1 vs h265 hardware encoding

Post by klausbremst »

currently I tested AV1 encoding with an Intel Arc card.
The result is poor vs AV1/SVT. Lot of details are washed away.

Recently I encoded lot of videos with an Nvidea 1660 card with h265.
I think, the differences to sw encoding were not that high.

I am going to retest the Arc vs my previous Nvidea card per h265.

Sure the AV1 performance per software encoding is better vs h265, but needs a lot of time.
Do you have any experiences and what do you do?

I know, it maybe subject to endless discussions; but let me have your conclusions.
One more contribution:
I would accept a degrade to 95% quality whatever this means, but AV1/SVT is very time consuming

That's atypical, most people are relatively happy with AV1 hardware encoding vs H.265 hardware encoding.

But as a general question, that's about all we can say.

On that note, I have been testing software AV1 decoding. Using a 2160p@60 AV1 encode from YouTube, since YouTube sometimes encodes stuff to AV1 now, I found that with dav1d 1.0, in Kodi, an i7 4790 only drops the occasional frame. Just a bit more efficiency and it'd be just fine.
