Loading H265 Has No Audio Track

Post by shanebough »

Description of problem or question:
I have an IP camera that records in H265 format. When I load those files into Handbrake, it says No Audio Track. No matter what I do with the audio settings, I still get no audio in the output. The files do have audio when played in Windows Media Player (and other programmes).

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
Just load the H265 file in Handbrake.
This is what the Source label says : 20230506123357076 2304x1296 (2304x1296), 20 FPS, 0 Audio Tracks, 0 Subtitle Tracks

This is what the summary says the following (even though the extension of the file is .265 and the audio setting in the camera says H265)...
Tracks: H.264 (x264), 30 FPS PFR
No Audio Tracks
No Subtitle Tracks
Chapter Markers

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.6.1

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Windows 10

Hmmm - it seems like the other post might have been rejected even though it was more complete, so, here are the contents of the other post if anyone can point me in the right direction, that would be great.
Here is a link to the source file if anyone wants to see what I mean.

Your input is an H.265 elementary stream. It has no audio.

It must come with a separate audio file with e.g. the same name and a different extension (HandBrake does not support external audio files, although I am surprised that Windows Media Player actually would).

I cannot see any other files - I copied the single file to another laptop and it plays with audio, so the audio must be contained within that file, right?

Could be a proprietary format just close enough to an HEVC elementary stream to be recognized as such. What model camera do you have?

The sample you uploaded is video only. Even then, the video appears to be a bit of a mess. (Not Unsurprising. It's quite common with camera devices. Their output is often unusable junk. Had to deal with this myself.)

I'm guessing there was maybe a plugin installed to allow WMP to play this as it won't play it here. VLC wouldn't play it either. MPC-HC does with difficulty (no audio). MediaInfo says Video Only as well.

It's a bit hit or miss whether these files can be transcoded into something workable or not. You could try ffmpeg to see if it's any better.

All I know is it is this one...
https://gardenature.co.uk/pages/wifi-bi ... era-system

The video is recorded by XMEye VMS. Not sure if that is a factor.

The two machines that can play this video both have XMEye VMS installed, so I guess WIndows Media must be picking up on a codec somehow.

Possibly. A quick web search provides anecdotal evidence that recordings made by this software can only be played by said software's built-in player.
https://xmeye-vms.en.softonic.com/mac wrote:Additionally, downloaded videos are encrypted and can only be played by the exclusive media player.
There's also https://image.makewebeasy.net/makeweb/0 ... อมพิวเ.pdf which doesn't address the possibility of processing the output in third-party software either.

It might be a good idea to look to see if you can find recording software (with support for your IP camera) that is also more flexible and/or better documented.

Yeah - thanks Rodeo - I appreciate the research - I assumed h265 was a standard that all video software developers should follow, or that Handbrake was capable of using installed codec to cope with the proprietary formats, like WIndows Media can. It looks like I am at a dead end here. I have looked around for alternative software, but the couple that I tried a while back didn't recognise the camera. If anyone has switched from XMEye to something else that can be recommended, I'd love to hear about it.

Re: Loading H265 Has No Audio Track

H.265 is a standard *video* compression format, that is usually placed in a container (e.g. the "MP4" file format) along with audio encoded in e.g. AAC.

HandBrake can decode H.265 video (even in elementary streams, but those -- real H.265 elementary streams, I mean -- only contain video frames). It cannot decode unknown video+audio combinations masquerading as H.265 elementary streams, however.

Understood. So, no solution here for me then - but at least I understand why. Thanks for your generous time.
