subtitles lag and incomplete after burn-in

Post by JSJB11 »

Description of problem or question:
Burned-in subtitles appear but are incomplete or lag the speech, although DVD works fine

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
This is a DVD in NTSC format that I'm trying to convert to play in a Roku streaming box using DLNA (the Roku does not allow me to change subtitle tracks so they have to be burned in).

Although subtitles do appear in the .mkv file, they are not complete: sometimes characters speak for some time and no subtitles appear, other times narration is not subtitled at all even though it lasts for over 30 seconds.

When playing the DVD itself, these problems do not appear.

I've pasted the last activity log for this although the problem happens consistently across many changes in handbrake settings.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):1.6.1+ds1-1 (Debian Linux)

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Debian Linux 6.1.4-1

And also, please try a snapshot build from https://github.com/HandBrake/HandBrake-snapshots it has a subtitle-related fix that may help with this.

And make sure you are not using unofficial versions. Repositories love to compile HandBrake with their packaged FFmpeg version, which breaks subtitles.
They know, we know, but they don't care.
Try the Flatpak version from https://handbrake.fr/downloads.php

Thanks Rodeo and Ritsuka,

The flatpac build definitely works properly and I see the subtitles correctly on my PC.

I've submitted a Debian bug: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrep ... ug=1032972
as it makes their packaged version of handbrake almost unusable.
