Subtitle settings for foreign films - What is best practice?

Post by freedon »

Handbrake 1.6.0
Mac OSX High Sierra

It is not clear in the subtitles section how to get/include english subtitles ripping a non-english HD film. It is not clear in the unline domumentation either. (I understand that "buring in" permanently records the Subtitles into the video.)

When I have inserted the DVD and loaded it so I see a frame in the Summary dialog, have set a destination, a preset and chapters x-xx,
what is the best practice in the Subtitles dialog? I always want to see only English subtitles in a ll non-english films I rip.

THAAANKS!!!

The practice would be to enable the subtitle in question, and burn it in.

The questionable part of it is, "Which subtitle NUMBER is 'english' and is it a full subtitle track, or only the parts that are non-English?'

Your example has two English subtitles, for different reasons; one for each possible viewing "angle". You need to choose, as there isn't an automatic way to do it. They may be in a different order on the next video, or there may only be one, or maybe more than 2 because you have "wide screen full", "wide screen just the needed ones", and the same for full screen/letterbox.

That's the part that is hard to automate, especially since "read directly from DVD" is a special add-on you have set up. Usually, this is from reading the already-read file, which works a bit differently. Any method recommended for DVD would be broken if you tried reading a BD.

Try ripping with makemkv first.

Then try encoding and see if you have any issues.

Don’t burn the subtitle. Just enter “English” in the subtitle settings and make it default. Any decent player will pick it up even in PGS format.
