No subtitles

Hello,

I'd like to convert the files (*.IFO, *.VOB) I got from a DVD into an MP4 file. I'm used to ffmpeg, but this is the first time I try HandBrake.

Description of problem or question:
Although I selected the option, subtitles are missing when playing the MP4 in VLC.

DVD Bitmap Subtitles (VOBSUB)

With MP4, you can burn ONLY 1 subtitle track into the video.
With MKV, you can pass-through multiple VOBSUB tracks. These are not burned into the video unless you choose to do so however you can only burn 1 subtitle track into the file. The rest must be passed through.

Without knowing what I'm doing, I tried VobSub to get idx+sub, and then SubRip… which requires me to confirm each letter to turn them fro bitmap to text :-/

So apparently, a DVD doesn't hold subtitles as text, but as bitmaps.

So the next step, is extracting those as SUB+IDX, running those into an OCR using eg. SubtitleEdit, fixing the inevitable errors, saving the output as an SRT file, and finally converting the VOBs into an MP4 file.

Problem solved: I used…
1. Handbrake to turn the VOB+IFO files into a single MP4
2. VobSub to extract the subtitles from the VOB+IFO into SUB+IDX; They are bitmaps not text
3. Subtitle Edit to read the SUB+IDX, run the material through the provided OCR eg. Tesseract, fixing the inevitable glitches, save file as SRT
4. ffmpeg to merge MP4 and SRT

You should be able to do 2 then 3, then import your SRT while encoding. One less step.
