How to set HandBrake on Ubuntu 22.04 to use the CPU to its full load (to encode on all cores), please?

Post by Boris911 »

Description of problem or question:
I have a dedicated server with two Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2620 v4 @ 2.10GHz (8 cores/16 threads = 16 cores/32 threads total), 64GB RAM, 1TB SSD and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.

The weird thing is that it can't use the full power of the server when encoding, and Handbrake uses only max 25% of the total power of both CPUs. It's strange because when I installed Windows 10 Professional on a dedicated server via the iKVM console, the Windows version of Handbrake can use both CPUs to their full load potential.

But for security reasons, I'd rather have Linux on there (I connect via Putty with an SSH key to the dedicated server, where I have the port forwarded to 127.0.0.1:5901 and I connect via VNC Client from my machine. And there I run the Linux version of Handbrake.

It takes several times longer than on my home PC with AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, 64GB RAM, 1TB SSD and Windows 11 Professionl. But this one has a high power consumption of over 330W (according to the UPS consumption). The parameters in Handbrake, for x265 are the same as on the Linux version. Only at home I get it in 12 hours, but on a dedicated server it's 24-36 hours, because for some mysterious reason it can't use the full power of the XEON processors when running Linux. And the cost is "on par" with what I would pay for electricity if I encode it at home with the fans roaring (AMD Ryzen temperature when encoding is 89,7C with water cooler, with air cooler it went over 90C = 97C for example, which is harmful to the processor). When I turn on, at full blast, the mobile air conditioner, it's already roaring, like in a server room somewhere.

So I will sell my home computer and let the computational tasks (video encoding) run on a dedicated server. But it would like to solve that, so that Handbrake can load all cores in Linux, please.

I thank you very much in advance.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
On the HTOP and on the Gnome System Monitor is total CPUs usage only up to 25%.

First, the CPU isn't ideal for video encoding. The low clock speed means you will likely hit a decode or filter bottleneck. Also note that NUMA (dual socket) is not optimal either.

Post an encode log and we can see if we can make any suggestions, but ultimately, it's often tricky getting this kind of configuration fully utilised without running more than 1 encode at once.

x265 encoder can't work via GPU. When I tried nvEnc (nVidia GPU), AMD VCE (AMD GPU) and Quick Sync (Intel GPU), there wasn't CRF, only CQP and finished video have much more size then x265 Placebo with CRF encoded video. Speed on encoding isn't priority for me. Only quality. I transfer all my bought DVD/Blu-Ray movie library to NAS (x265).

Re: How to set HandBrake on Ubuntu 22.04 to use the CPU to its full load (to encode on all cores), please?

You can try removing the Comb Detect and Decomb filters if you know your source isn't interlaced.

Beyond that, I'd suggest not using placebo. It's rather pointless. You may be slightly better scaling if you dial it back to slow or slower.

Ultimately, you may have to run multiple jobs to get full utilisation.

PAL DVD-Video (720x576) is always interlaced.

Technically yes, but most movies on PAL DVD are just progressive frames encoded as though they were interlaced, and can be encoded in HandBrake without Decomb/Deinterlace while still giving a correct result.

I would definitely go from placebo down to veryslow, but for SD frame sizes you may indeed to do multiple parallel encodes to maximize CPU usage anyway.

I can’t remember if the nightly build supports this, but worth a try.

I recomplile Handbrake to last version from github. There isn't parallel job run, too. I found that you don't support it in linux https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/latest/tec ... ation.html.

For Windows I found solution make in GUI joblist and export it to json file. Afterthat run it with this command e.g.

Code: Select all

HandBrakeCLI --queue-import-file file.json --parallel=4
like run 4 file encoding parallelly from the queue json file. This isn't work in the linux distributions. :(

Well, I resolved it. I found that when I click on handbrake by right mouse button there is context menu where is possible open new Handbrake GUI instance:

I open and run 4 Handbrake instances. Now it uses almost all the computing power (with five instances it will run at full load).

The Handbrake forum doesn't seem to show pictures, so I'll add that as links.
