MTS files - no valid source found

Post by Xyke »

Description of problem or question:

I'm a new Handbrake user. I just installed v 1.5.1. I'm trying to convert MTS files from a Sony camcorder to MP4. I've saved individual MTS files from a BDMV directory to my desktop, but Handbrake gives me the error message "No valid source found" when I try to open them.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
Version 1.5.1 (2022011000)

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
macOS 12.1 Montery

Any suggestions about how to open these old files would be appreciated. I can't play or edit my camcorder files on my computer at all.

Can you open the files in any program such as VLC?

Thanks for asking. I didn't have any luck with VLC's Convert/Stream, either. :( It makes me wonder if there's something wrong with the source files - if they are being corrupted somehow? I think I was able to use VLC to convert older footage just a few months ago. I shot the footage I'm trying to convert now just last night.

When I tried VLC, I was trying to conver with input directly from the camera's hard drive, to convert and save to output on my laptop. When that didn't work, I saved the files to my laptop and then tried converting them. I'm extracting the files from the BDMV directory; I'm not sure if that's part of the issue or not. Very frustrated.

Does VLC even play them?

I'm not sure if it's relevant, but I can't preview the footage in my Finder. I read somewhere online that that may be caused by a change with Mac OS Monterey, though.

No, I can't play the files with VLC, either. I can only play them on the camera.

It's most likely not a proper transport stream, despite the name, or maybe encrypted somehow. Which camcorder is it specifically?

It's a Sony HDR-XR200. I bought it in the mid-2000s.

I think it's possible that I used an older laptop to convert files from the camera in the past. I'm away from home and didn't bring that computer. I may try that when I get back.

This is odd, looks like a fairly standard AVCHD model. Maybe something went wrong copying the files from the camcorder to your hard drive?

I don't think that's it. There are two video directories on the camera's internal drive - AVCHD and BDVM. If I save the files from the AVCHD directory to my computer, there's no problem.

I don't know why, but up to a certain date, the camera automatically saved video files in the AVCHD directory, but after that date, has been saving all new video to the BDVM directory. I'm only having trouble with the BDVM files. It seems really weird.

See if something else can find a viable video/audio stream in there and remux.

mkvmerge, avidemux, etc.
