265 recompress to 264(quick) or 265 (way to long)
Trying to recompress a video file
steps
Select a 265 encoded file, try to reencode, constant quality on both 265 & 264 if its the only file, wait till an estimated ETA is displayed. 265 reencode is indicating approx 3x as long as 264 encode
variable framerate is selected
Hi, so either im doing something wrong or re-encoding a x265 file using the x265 encoder seems to take 3x longer than re-encoding a x265 file using the x264 encoder.
I know it could be my settings, my setup, going from x265 to x265 but considering
re-encoding the x265 to x264 is taking about the length of the file so a 1hour file is roughly 1 hour to re-encode or 3 hours in x265 is this normal or am i doing something wrong. ?
Ive tried the help files and other posts but havent found this problem mentioned anywhere ?
thanks in advance
HandBrake version (e.g., 1.5.1):
macOS 10.14.6 Mojave :

x265 is certainly slower than x264 at reasonable settings.
What's your actual goal here? Why are you reencoding? What are your speed/size/quality (pick 2) preferences?

Hi rollin_eng
Thanks for the link, I’m not sure it answers my question but certainly it shows how different settings effect the time taken to complete an encode.
I believe when I first started using handbreak I picked what I considered my best preset but since then I’ve been saving my own presets.

If you look at the benchmarks they basically confirm that x265 is slower than x264.

First, lets say, im obsessive compulsive, i save what i don’t want to watch and erase
Second lets say that mostly i prefer to use my own compression over what someone else decides is appropriate.
Third mostly when i want to save something, i normally try to start with the BluRay copy before i compress to the size i want to save.
Fourth, sounds is on balance, almost as iportant as image, i like a good balance.
Over time i have established that on a megabyte / min for sound and vision combined i like
10Meg/Min low quality
16Meg/Min Med quality
20Meg/Min Med/High quality
24 Meg/Min High quality
32Meg/Min Very High quality
I assume the file ive downloaded would have been optimised for VBR so when i recompress im only looking at stepping down using a constant quality. So when im trying to work out what RF setting to use, i use the following as a guide
60M @ 0.6Gb + eAC256 = x10 Low
60M @ 1.0Gb + eAC384 = x16 Med
60M @ 1.0Gb + eAC576 = x20 Med
60M @ 1.4Gb + eAC768 = x24 High
60M @ 2.0Gb + DTS = x32 High
So most things being equal, I multiply the Mins & Seconds by the factor above & that is my target file size, then I mess around with the RF settings to get the file size as close to my target as possible.
Mostly ive used 264 for compatibility but lately ive noticed most of our devices can now handle 265. On a 265 series i downloaded i decided they were bigger than i needed, so i decided to recompress. making them 264 was as quick as usual. but the 265 was much slower. my i7 processor and 16 gig of ram and Eco SSD may not be enough to encode 265 on everything but i thought i would play. When I noticed how long the recompression was taking i thought it would be good to get some more info.
What i have registered is either i can settle for smaller file, or i can’t have better quality video for the same size files as 264 & i would suggest i would probably mostly settle on the better quality video as my default option.
does that answer your question ?

Can you point me to or
tell me the difference between
265
265 10 bit
265 12 bit ???
Thx

Are those MB/min figures for Saving Private Ryan or The Social Network?

8 bit, 10 bit and 12 bit are just using more bits to store data.
10 bit h265 seems to be fairly widely supported.

Adjusting your RF to get a certain bitrate makes little sense.
If you want a certain bitrate just do a 2 pass encode with your required bitrate.

1. Are you telling me some players may Not support 265 12bit encoding. ???
2. I can’t work out if 10 or 12 bit are faster or slower than each other ???
3. Does this setting have any effect on file size ???
Thanks

1. Yes
2. 12 bit should be slower
3. 12 bit may be bigger size

Re: 265 recompress to 264(quick) or 265 (way to long)
Hi mduell
Um neither
GoT final season had so much particle information my file sizes were huge.
Dr. Who’s about 2Gb each episode
Altered Carbon about the same
Agents of Shield about 1.5Gb
Discovery about the same.
Then there are excellent series that don’t need as bigger file size but I don’t want to be stingy like
Loki or
Umbrella Academy
I could go on but I won’t.
TBH, until recently I have not re compressed movies however I was saddened to note most mp4 movies only use 224kbps for the audio, which for stereo would be adequate but for 5.1 or more is just not good enough for the best movies. So I expect to take my 10-20Gb movies where I also keep mp4 equivalents & Recompress those MP4’s with better sound.
Hope that gives you an idea mduell

From what I understand RF is the way to go, gives better results uses vbr so higher br on particle scenes etc.
My numbers are ballpark targets.
I used to use bitrate settings with quick time pro
I certainly think my own results have gotten better the more I compress but using 265 I’m trying to work out how it works & cut down on the conversation times

Re: 265 recompress to 264(quick) or 265 (way to long)
You said above that you adjust your RF to get your desired bitrate, if this is the case you are better of just using 2 pass ABR.
