3-Pass Encoding, Is It Possible?

Post by HD MOVIE SOURCE »

Just wondered, is it possible to run more passes for x264 and x265? Are there commands to adjust 1,2 and even 3 passes? Would you need to turn off 2-pass encoding in handbrake and then use a special command?

Thank you.

HB can do 3 pass encoding. As long as the first pass is the foreign audio search subtitle scan.

Not sure why you need "more passes" than the software normally makes. Two-pass is pretty much the maximum used, with (as mduell points out) a (potential) "first pass" to determine whether some non-protocol checks need to run.

X264 certainly supports 3 pass encoding (not sure about x265) so I assume it's there for a reason.
