Ugly looking subtitles

Post by MickM »

Description of problem or question:
I have a DVD (The Predator) from which I ripped the main movie via MDRP on the Mac. The file format is still VOB i.e. no compression was done, it's just the main movie with all the original audio and subtitle tracks. The subtitles are not burned into the video i.e. in VLC I can select which ever one I want and it displays just fine EXCEPT for the fact that the font is just plain ugly dot matrix looking thing - see this image:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/0r2a28zc2xs6l ... t.png?dl=0
At this point, Handbrake isn't involved yet, but because my subtitles are soft I'm assuming the ugly font I'm seeing is either VLC's fault i.e. a lousy font default, or MDRP's fault for corrupting the font (although all MDRP did was pass through everything, so I'm doubting it's that).

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
I now use Handbrake to compress the movie and burn in the (forced) subtitles in the few spots where a foreign language is spoken, but the resultant font is still the same ugly one. How can I get a good looking subtitle font burned into the video? What I have now is just unacceptable.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.5.1

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
macOS 11.6.2 Big Sur

VOBSUB subtitles are pictures, generated by the author of the video. What you see is what you had.

If you want better, you will have to find a Substation Alpha subtitle that was done by someone who cares enough to do it right, since the disk author apparently didn't.

Thanks. Interestingly, I see this exact same crappy font for forced subtitles on many, many DVDs that have brief sections of foreign language. You're effectively saying the extent to which the DVD authors don't care is apparently quite widespread - that's (annoyingly) amazing!

If I use MDRP on the Mac to compress the movie, instead of just extracting the main movie, then I get beautiful looking subtitles. Based on what you're saying, it sounds like MDRP is scouring the internet for those subtitle pictures, and using those instead.

Sadly, I have many thousands DVD files and I just can't remember which movies have forced subtitles that might require special treatment. I can't tolerate that ugly font, so that sort of backs me into a corner of using a compression program that also *automatically* looks for those SSA subtitles. I've never used such subtitles before, so I have some learning to do. I briefly looked at Handbrake and it appears it can't handle external subtitle files, although I did see that HandbrakeCLI could. Given that I want to batch automate the compression of my DVD library, how can I incorporate the *automatically* locating of those SSA files into my flow? I can't use MDRP because it's only GUI driven so I'd have to do each file manually (which is a non-starter). Given that I'm a Mac user, I'd appreciate any volunteered solutions for that platform if possible. It would be perfect if HandbrakeCLI could do that!

Can you post a screenshot of MDRP subtitles?

It's entirely possible that MDRP is doing smoothing on the subtitle pictures. I'm not familiar with the application, so I cannot say.

Another possibility is that the font, while tagged as "widescreen", was composed for a 4:3 display, then squashed to fit 16:9. It does look vertically compressed.

I wonder if HB is squashing the subtitles. If you turn of cropping what does it look like?

I simply don't see either of those possibilities as possible - sorry :-). Why wouldn't you think it's an alternative SSA subtitle like you originally suggested? I'm going to take a look through MDRP's logs and see if there's something interesting to report there. Stay tuned... (BTW: MDRP = Mac DVDRipper Pro)

So I looked at the MDRP log file and rummaged around inside the MDRP package on the Mac. It looks like MDRP is doing OCR on the subtitles. Within its package contents it appears to have a modified version of HandBrakeCLI that can accept the option:
--subtitle-ocr <socket_name>

Here's some pertinent text from the log file:

There you go then, if MDRP is ocring then it may be using a better font.

Anyway, just to get closure on this topic, the only way I can think of to automate the compression of my video library is to pass nicer looking SSA subtitles/pictures into HandBrakeCLI, but that spawns another issue in that I don't know how to automate that. MDRP extracts the DVD's fingerprint (whatever that is):

2022-01-17 13:42:29.598 MDRP[11708:19478469] fingerprint: BCFD1387-905D-8708-5D98-A0A7D0579D0E
2022-01-17 13:42:29.598 MDRP[11708:19478294] getDiscInfoForFingerprint: BCFD1387-905D-8708-5D98-A0A7D0579D0E, allowDI: 0

and from there it can apparently get cover art etc. Presumably that fingerprint could also be used to get SSA subtitles? Presumably then there exists a program that accepts that fingerprint as an argument and gets SSA subtitles? I'm out of my league here - bottom line, I'm still stuck with no good batch solution to compress my library. Sigh.

Say - I recall there a way in HandBrakeCLI to detect foreign language subtitles (using some 10% threshold or whatever). Is there a way to abort the compression if such a subtitle is detected? That will at least allow me to deal with most of my library that doesn't have subtitles, leaving behind stuff I could tolerate doing one by one using MDRP.

Just bumping this thread in the hopes of getting an answer to my last question. I simply can't remember every movie that has forced subtitles. Is there a way in HandBrakeCLI to detect the existence of these so my script can separately deal with those movies?
