Older Xeon E5-2697v3 or i7-10700k/5600g?

Post by jsmith1299 »

Description of problem or question:
Hi All,

I currently have an Intel Xeon E5-2643v3 (6-core) processor which is based off of Haswell. I'm getting around 45-50 fps while encoding at x264 and 5100kbps. I was thinking of upgrading to either a i7-10700k or 5600g. Someone mentioned I could be better off getting a Xeon E5-2697v3 which has 14 cores but a slower clock speed and running two handbrake tasks at the same time. They mentioned that this could be equivalent to either of the new processors. I checked on Anandtech and see that the i7-10700k can produce 227fps (granted it was at 3500 kbps) but I just can't see that Xeon 2697v3 even get close to this. Can someone help me out with which would be the better way to go here, the Xeon is around $110 for the 14 core while I would need new memory, CPU and MB for the others?

Thanks,
Nick

Given the cost difference, I'd do the 2697v3. For low res or single thread limited encodes (some filters) you may need to run two at once to max it out, but for higher res encodes you'll be fine with one at a time.

Encoding speed has little to do with bitrate, it's all about the encoder speed preset you choose.

Generally true, but the time spent in CABAC does depend on the bitrate; last I experimented with it, all other settings being equal, doubling the bitrate did reduce encoding speed by about 10% for the same source (of course, that's with a specific set of settings; the impact might be lower -- or higher -- for any other set of different settings).

10% vs OP is talking about a 5x difference in speed. It's got to be a different encoder preset.

Thanks for the replies. I missed in the Anandtech link that they were going from 1080p to 720p. I only want to convert 1080p to a lower bitrate. When I ran a test from 1080p to 720p using 5100 as the bitrate I was getting in the lower 60s and sometimes hitting 70. I'll give the 2697v3 a try and see what I get. I should recoup most of the money back selling the E5-2643v3.
