Help! converting to H.265 VideoToolBox on M1 Macs!

Post by devilmonkey98 »

Description of problem or question:
So I'm trying to convert my movie and TV collection to H.265 to save space on my NAS to be able to fit more on there and I'm taking advantage of the insane conversion speeds of the new M1 processor in my MacBook (190 - 250+ fps). However, I can't get the right Constant Quality on the settings and it seems to always be a low bitrate or too high of a bitrate and ends up being a larger file than the H.264 version! Does anyone have a recommended CQ for 1080p and 4K video files? It doesn't need to be custom to each video file, just enough so that the bitrate keeps the video smooth and looking right! Couldn't find any information online so this should be a useful thread for other users with the same issue as me :)

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
HandBrake 14.0 Beta.1

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Mac OS Big Sur 11.2

HandBrake Activity Log ***required*** (see How-to get an activity log)
I'm finding it hard to understand the activity log!

Low 20s are reasonable values; higher for 4K, lower for HD.
