Encoding bluray rip with Matroska H.265 or H.264 presets cause Manjaro Linux to crash/shutdown

Post by mdhankins »

Description of problem or question:

Encoding bluray rip with Matroska H.265 or H.264 presets cause Manjaro Linux to crash/shutdown

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

Using Manjaro Linux, kernel 5.9 with latest updates. I am attempting to encode a bluray rip of Angel Has Fallen made with MakeMKV. A few seconds into the encode, my computer shuts down. Looks like it crashed, but I am unable to find any details about a panic in journalctl. The log just stops. I initially thought it was just x265, but I discovered that I get the same results with the Matroska H.264 1080p30 preset. The same file can be encoded with the General HQ 1080p30 Surround preset without any issues (running now).

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

HandBrake version 1.3.3-4 (installed binary from official repo)

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Manjaro Linux - latest updates installed

Linux HOSTNAME 5.9.3-1-MANJARO #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Nov 1 14:25:36 UTC 2020 x86_64 GNU/Linux

What you describe fits the "cooling isn't enough, let's turn off to save the CPU" scenario. Do you have a CPU temperature monitor widget installed? What are your CPU temps before, at the start of the encode, and before it shuts down?

Handbrake will stress your CPU more than just about any program you would normally run, so proper cooling is IMPORTANT.

It barely works on the encode for a few seconds before shutting down. Pretty unlikely it has anything to do with cooling.

I'm using the stock NUC. Do not have any temp widget installed, but I thought some of that info was captured in the inxi -Faxy output that I captured. In any case, if CPU temp was the issue I would think that it would not be able to complete any encoding, including H.264 - which it just finished.

I just tried an encode and modified a preset to use h.265 and h.264 with qsv. Both caused the crash to occur.

If you mean the Manjaro repo, then it's not an official HandBrake build. It may not be the cause of the crash, but it's worth trying an official build just in case.

Our official Linux builds are distributed via flatpak. You need to set up flatpak for your distro, then you can get the flatpak here: https://handbrake.fr/downloads.php

(the official flatpak might also be on flathub, but I'm not 100% sure of it, so best to go with the manual download)

I installed the Handbrake flatpak (using the Discover utility) and started an encode using the Matroska H265 1080p30 preset. Was right in the middle of typing here to say that it was working fine and then my computer shutdown.

At this point not sure if there is something odd going on with my computer or an actual bug that I've found. Am considering trying a different distro to see if I can duplicate the issue. If you have any other suggestions to try, please let me know.

Here's the encode log from this last attempt. https://pastebin.com/fAKV06nU
