Saving in wrong format

Description of problem or question:


When I try to convert a DVD into a MP4 format, it converts it to a M4V format. I even tried to see if I could take the converted M4V file and tryy converting it into the MP4 format this also did not work.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
I just opened the drive and added the folder and selected MP4 as my file type.

M4V and MP4 are the same.

You can set the default to MP4 in the preferences or just rename the files yourself.

The problem I was having was editing it in a program that needed mp4. I do have it set to mp4 but it is saving as m4v. I did discover they are the same and changed the file type. I am hoping that does not degrade the file at all. Thanks for your help.

rename SomeRandomFile.m4v SomeRandomFile.mp4

No degradation whatsoever. And if the software is "limited" by file extension, rather than checking the file itself, that's [fill in your own adjectives].

In Preferences->Output files, you can tell handbrake to always use the .mp4 extension.

The reason .m4v is the default is that some older Apple software and devices will disable certain features if the extension isn't .m4v.

m4v had chapter support for older apple devices.
mp4 now has chapter support for all devices.
that is the ONLY DIFFERENCE.
the extensions are interchangeable.
Please do not waste another second of your existence belaboring this.
