MP4 files appearing as "Stereo.mp4" on TVs

Post by KEAYOS »

Description of problem or question:

Hi - please forgive the clumsy terms i'm not techy

Been using Handbrake for many years without issue to save video files in Mp4 / H264 storing them on a 6 year old WD My Book Live NAS and streaming via the built in Twinky server to a Samsung TV and a Sony TV.

This week had cause to replace ancient laptop with a new one and installed a new version of handbrake. Immediately noticed that whilst files looked fine with correct names when both TV's were reading them they were coming out as "Stereo,MP4". Initially files wouldn't play at all

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

Turned off the specific AMD VCE encoder and that created files that would play in TVs but still with the file names "stereo.mp4"

The issue seems to be with Handbrake as files created via other video software seem fine. Also Handbrake creating MKV files seems fine, but TVs are slow to play MKVs. Tried altering and resetting metadata - no effect keep getting "stereo.mp4" as the file name on the TVs

I've tried going in and deleting the audio track in handbrake and that works - it creates a file on the NAS with the correct details been seen by the TVs - but obviously no sound

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

Version 13.3

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Windows 10 Home 64 bit
Version 1909
Processor AMD Ryzen 7 4700U - Acer Swift

Re: MP4 files appearing as "Stereo.mp4" on TVs

Post by s55 »

This is a problem with the Twonky Server. It's reading the audio track name as the title.

The only way to fix this is to use a tagger to add a video title or remux the file to drop the audio titles off the file.

MANY THANKS FOR THIS!!!

I looked up "Remux" and using a program called OBS converted the working MKV file to MP4 in seconds that seemed to be recognised by the NAS and TVs - problem seem solved for now.

When we replace the NAS, probably within the next 12 months will look for one with a better media player - suggestions welcome.

If your happy with MKV, you might try using MKV output direct in HandBrake rather than MP4. Save using 3rd party tools to convert.
Afaik, it's only MP4 files that twonky takes issues with.

TVs seem to take a very long time to open up MKVs - MP4s are quick, I've also noticed the problem seems, at the moment, restrcted to files coming out of Handbrake. MP4s created by HD Movie Maker Pro seem fine.

For the time being where I need to use handbrake I will probably use it to create the MKV and then remux it to MP4.

I don't know why Twonky has all of a sudden taken issue since the new version of handbrake....

1.2 or 1.3 (I forget) introduced a change to the way audio tags are written. If using earlier versions of HandBrake, you would not have this problem.

That change, was to resolve issues with other players having problems with the audio track naming.

I reported this problem earlier this year.I was told to contact the developers of the Twonky media server. The company that developed twonky shut down several years ago so my solution was to reinstall version 1.1.2 of handbrake and everything works, not a perfect solution but it works.I hope this helps.
