VHS Camera RIP

Post by joesatriani »

Hi, I have recorded VHS-C tapes on DVD recorder.
Now I want to transfer to PC. I use Windows 10.
In first DVD I have 3 titles. Why handbrake shows 6 titles?
Can you help me for settings? I don't want to make big files if no need!
Thank you

We cannot advise you on anything without seeing the required logs. We do not know what handbrake saw, nor do we know what you told it to do.

This DVD has 3 titles, I don't understand why I see title 1-2-3 5-6-7 (5-6-7 are the same 1-2-3).

Try pasting this in, but change “username” to your username.

You have a DVD RAM recorder. You will see six titles. Pick the three that work.

1 GB for a 45 minute SD encode is not "very big," it sounds about right if you want optimum quality. Raise your CRF if you want a smaller file...

Look at your Video page in Handbrake! Here, one time only, I have made a picture for you.
You, and you alone set the CRF at 22 by choosing the preset you did. Make it higher and your file will be smaller.
Going forward, please consult the excellent documentation on this site for learning basic controls and settings, rather than asking individual questions for each detail, thanks.
Best of Luck.

Uhh, that was a quick shot to show you the CRF Control circled in red, and nothing else relating to your particular video. Thanks so much for "appreciating" my extra effort, but I am ending our lesson here. The available Handbrake resources are your best teacher, and Good Luck!

Your disk is giving you lots of errors/issues.

You should try ripping with makemkv, then encode with HB.

Multiple possibilities on disk errors.

I have commercially-produced DVD-R disks that I have to pull a DVD drive out to read. After going through 3 copies of a single title, the seller started tagging all such disks as 'May not be compatible with all players." on their web page. I eventually had to use a Linux box to create an ISO using a DVD drive, then MakeMKV could handle it from there (I haven't put MakeMKV on any of my Linux boxes yet).

Most of the errors in the log could also come from the disk having CSS encryption on it, which should NOT be the case, if it was recorded on a DVD recorder.

A way to test whether it is actual read errors vs. encryption that should not be there, you can try copying the whole disk to a directory. Using Windows Explorer, select EVERYTHING in the disk root and copy to a directory on your hard drive. If everything copies without error, then the readability of the disk is less likely.

Another way would be to rip with MakeMKV to MKV files, and see if it encounters any read errors. MakeMKV will remove any encryption if it finds it, so that would remove two possibilities at once.

Ok but now I have ripped video on hard disk. If I watch this video I don't see problems...I don't understand why rolling_eng said my disk has many errors...

Because your log listed thousands of errors; that was why it was sooooooo big.

If there were no read errors when copying the disk to your hard drive, you can now try opening the copy on the drive with handbrake or MakeMKV. Assuming there is no copy protection or structural issues, handbrake should be able to read it, but you may still need MakeMKV for this.

It was likely recorded on a DVD-Ram recorder. The entire structure is different. Those may be only errors as far as Handbrake sees them.
