Getting foreign-only subtitles to burn-in

Post by jtnoel »

Description of problem or question:
I am re-encoding a bunch of digital media (because of a MOV atom issue with Plex). The movies that I am putting through handbrake (which fixes the playback issue in Plex) all play fine in VLC prior to going through HB. The foreign-only subtitles work just fine. But when I encode the video through HB, which again fixed the playback issue in Plex, the foreign-only subtitles are gone and I am forced, when I can find it, to sidecar subtitles (which I don't want to do as finding foreign-only subtitles can be a pain). What I'm looking for is pretty simple: some settings to ensure that my foreign-only audio that is burned into my original encode is still there after going through handbrake. I am encoding to MP4 (.264) using the general 1080 HQ 30fps settings.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
Latest (I keep it updated)

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
MacOS High Sierra

Sorry for the late reply. I was away from my computer that I use for encoding. Here is the log file. There is one line that is especially worrisome: [17:51:45] Skipping subtitle scan. No suitable subtitle tracks.

So I know that the .mp4 I am putting through HB has subtitles as I played it back on VLC prior to putting it through HB, selected English, and had the foreign-audio subtitles appear just fine. CLEARLY I do not have something set in HB correctly. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you re-encoding a previously-encoded video? Handbrake isn't finding any subtitle tracks:

If they're already burned in, they could be in the cropped area.

Yes. I have to re-encode because the original encode has an issue with Plex. When I re-encode with HB, the issue is gone but so are the subtitles that were part of the original encoding movie which is what makes that log entry so puzzling.

Yeah, wondered that myself but when I playback the original encoded video, the foreign-audio subtitles are displayed on the active video (about an inch or two from the bottom).

The original source appears to be a Bluray, which would have had PGS subtitles. MP4 cannot deal with PGS, so they subtitles would have had to have been burned in by the time this round of encoding took place.

The log says crop/scale filter was skipped (I assume this means it was turned off), but the storage/display dimensions are consistent with cropping having already occurred.

A thought - is there an SRT file in the source directory with the same name as the source video? VLC may be picking that up and displaying it automagically, and it wouldn't be present in the output directory.

Thanks. There is no SRT file in the source directory. The original source is a rip from Apple iTunes through third-party software. Again, that rip (from .m4v to .mp4) works fine. The foreign-audio subtitles show up in the .mp4 as they do in the .m4v. They just don't show up in any output from HB when I re-encode it (.mp4, .mkv, etc.).

I'm having the same issue as the OP, while trying to convert a movie that I ripped from DVD using MakeMKV to an .mkv movie has built-in subtitles, but when I convert using HandBrake, the built-in subtitles disappear. I've attempted Foreign Audio Search (burned in & forced), as well as adding both English 0 (VOBSUB) and English 1 (VOBSUB) (burned in, forced, and default), but nothing seems to work.

Re: Getting foreign-only subtitles to burn-in

Post by Deleted User 11865 »

kappabear wrote: Sat Sep 26, 2020 1:07 am I'm having the same issue as the OP, while trying to convert a movie that I ripped from DVD using MakeMKV to an .mkv movie has built-in subtitles, but when I convert using HandBrake, the built-in subtitles disappear. I've attempted Foreign Audio Search (burned in & forced), as well as adding both English 0 (VOBSUB) and English 1 (VOBSUB) (burned in, forced, and default), but nothing seems to work.

Your audio tracks don't seem to have language information (or rather, a seemingly invalid language code wjich HandBrake does not recognize), so Foreign Audio Search cannot match the English language subtitle tracks for a subtitle scan ("[10:33:48] Skipping subtitle scan. No suitable subtitle tracks.").

Try the same encode, with the MKV output format (instead of MP4) and adding both subtitle tracks as passthrough (i.e. make sure both "burned in" and "forced only" are unchecked for both subtitle tracks), and the video encoder preset set to ultrafast. We don't need the output file, we only care about the resulting encode log which will feature some subtitle statistics that can be useful.

Re: Getting foreign-only subtitles to burn-in

Post by jtnoel »

Okay, that seems to have fixed it for me. Unchecking those boxes for the subtitle files results in the output with foreign-audio subtitles burned in. Thanks for the help on this!
