Automatic Animorphic Settings Cropping 2px

Post by NikkoToska »

Description of problem or question:
While transcoding an anime series (Soul Eater) from my Blu-rays, I noticed that the automatic settings would sometimes crop 2px from the bottom and right, taking a 1920x1080 input and making it 1918x1078 as an output. I'm going to go back and transcode everything again, but I was wondering why it did that and what the best settings would be to preserve the original aspect ratio. I tried changing the settings to loose, but then it said that it was a 1922x1080 source. It thinks the PAR is 1233x1232, could that be right? Should it really be cropping?

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
Just select the file and leave cropping on automatic.

1.3.3

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

You can turn auto crop off.

You get better compression if you crop to 8 (per side) or 16 pixels. Make sure your resolution is evenly divisible by 16.

i.e.
1920 / 16 = 120 (good)
1912 / 16 = 119.5 (bad)
1904 / 16 = 119 (good)

In the Dimensions tab, there is a "Cropping", choose the "Custom" instead of "Automatic".
I used to have similar issue and I bought a [Removed Dubious Product Reference] VideoConverter to resolve the "Auto cropping problem" until I found this option is turned on default.

This is not true (in any meaningful way) with x264/x265.

I cannot speak for x265, but x264's Macroblock for High-Profile is 8x8, and the YCbCr value is 16x16. When you have these divided evenly, x264 doesn't have macroblocks that are half sized, and can accommodate for better compression throughout the block.

In either case, 2 pixels has the same issue.

If you mean "file size" when you say "in any meaningful way," it does help in all cases. A smaller video resolution (even 1904x1064), along with 16x16 macroblocks, will ultimately lead to a smaller file size. It doesn't have to be a lot, but it does work.

@mduell is correct.
It has nothing to do with Macroblock, Handbrake knows how to handle that!
Learn the difference between macroblock and Modulus, and you will give better advice in the future. x264/265 have handled Mod 2 since they were introduced, do your homework.

Let me get this straight... You're telling me that a lower resolution, and having macroblocks at 16x16 (i.e. making sure the resolution is evenly divisible by 16) will not result in a smaller file?

If that's the case, please explain why a 1916x1080 video is actually larger than the 1920x1080 when using the EXACT same settings?
Granted, it's not that much larger. But the file size is a bit bigger than the other.

Vagaries of how constant rate factor encoding works.

Adding big black bars will reduce the file size too. Doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Well, that's a rather "vague" answer. ;-)
mduell wrote: Tue Sep 22, 2020 8:59 pm Adding big black bars will reduce the file size too. Doesn't mean it's a good idea.
Yeah, I've played around with that as well.

I get a smaller file when I crop off the black bars (usually 1920x800) Sometimes there are little black non-used pixel areas that are in the TV overscan area out on the sides of the video which do not need to be encoded. So, sometimes you get 1918x1080, or 1920x1078. Things like that.

So, when I notice the resolution is off a bit, I crop it to the closest even division of 16, and I get a smaller file.

I have done tests on this as well, like comparing 1918x1080 vs 1920x1080, and getting smaller files.
So, if this can only be chalked up to "vagaries" it does seem to work very well in that format.

Encode both ways at a ABR target (2 pass), tune for SSIM or PSNR, and check the results.

Ah, the old "straw man" fallacy. No, I did not say anything like that, and I'll thank you not to put words in my mouth.

AVI, the oldest codec in existence, requires only that the dimensions be divisible by 4.
x264/x265 only requires both dimensions be divisible by 2 to avoid edge interpolation or decimation. Your 16x16 encoding theories are...well, imaginative.
As far as the rest of your inquiry, using CRF, if you can avoid sweating the little stuff, it will work for you. We make movies, not pixels.

I didn't put words into your mouth. Those were my words. And you threw out the "straw man" fallacy in an attempt to deflect my statement. So I will ask it again. I have made some slight modifications to the question to make it more appropriate to the conversation.

Will a lower resolution and/or having macroblocks at 16x16 (i.e. making sure the resolution is evenly divisible by 16) result in a smaller file?

My answer is: In some situations, a lower resolution will result in a larger file file, but in ALL cases, having the resolution evenly divisible by 16 results in a smaller file.

Right?

So then, what was wrong with my original statement?
