H.265 (Nvidea NVEnc) locks at 30% GPU

Post by N3W1 »

Description of problem or question:
The problem is that when using the option: H.264/5 (Nvidea NVEnc). The gpu and cpu lock at 30% use. I am almost certain that it is due to some program or windows update, since It did not do it before. I would like to be able to solve it without formatting the pc.

(I tried to attach images but they don't see it in the preview :P)

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
I don't think it is possible to replicate it. I didn't find this to happen to anyone else.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.3.3 (2020061300)

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC Evaluation
1809
17763.1457

GPU encoding doesn't actually use the GPU, it uses some extra video encoding hardware bolted on to the side of the GPU, so you're probably looking at the wrong utilization.

GPU encoding isn't expected to use much CPU.

What I know is that a few months ago I had an average fps of 250 or more and now I have 150. I remember that I used 100% of the gpu and cpu.

My opinion is that the encoding performance decreased, it is the second time it happened. Before it had happened to me, I formatted the pc and it had been solved. But I don't feel like reformatting. If anyone comes up with a solution or idea, it's welcome

Reading the log, a month ago I had an average fps of 470 and now 152 using the same settings ...

Where's your log from a month ago? All 3 logs are from today.

30% is pretty good, better than average.

Here are 2 logs, one from September 2 and other from August 30. On August 30 I made 20 encoders and I grabbed the last one.

Sometimes the CPU could be a bottle neck of performance the NVENC GPU encoder, that's due to the difference working principle of CPU & GPU.
Also,Video Decode, Crop, Scale, Fitlers: Decomb, Deinterlace, Denoise, Subtitle rendering etc are all CPU based. As an intergrated graphic card could not be utilized at all steps of the video conversion, a 30% cap isn't bad actually in this case.

I found the problem, MSI Afterburner... I closed it and everything went back to normal. I did not know that it could be a program until I saw the post in the forum. Rookie mistake lol

Aha! a siege player.

Some overclock software, like MSI Afterburner, Zotac Firestorm, will modify some of the parameters of your graphic card in order to working in a different frequency for higher performance, or other complex but delicate way to slightly cross over the line of it's original performance.

Working in the default setting & run encode acceleration (NVENC) will be preferred since your GPU was designed to working in that way.

Hahaha r6 is my favorite game. Thanks for the info guys, everything is useful to learn how to use the program and know how it works. With this teleworking I have to compress a lot of videos! I can't cope with storage
