Subtitle Help

Post by realdealblues »

Hello, I've tried reading the documentation and several posts on this forum but I'm not having any luck and am hoping someone can just give me a push in the right direction.

I have a BluRay I want to make digital. I have ripped it with MakeMKV and am using Handbrake (1.3.3) mainly to make it smaller.

I'm keeping it in MKV which I know allows me to "soft embed a subtitle track" and I simply want to be able to toggle the English subtitles on and off via VLC or maybe in Plex.

When I go to the Subtitles tab I have a track in there and it shows "Foreign Audio Scan" or "1 English PCS". From what I read, my understanding was I should choose the "English PCS", so I did and the first time I check the box for "Forced Only" and then under name I put "English" and in VLC I see the option to turn on English but no subtitles appeared.

The second time I tried checking "Burn In" which normally in the past when I have done a DVD ends up hardcoding the subtitles but I figured I would try it. I had no option to turn on subtitles in VLC and the subtitles weren't hardcoded either :?

I verified the original file has subtitles and I can turn them on and off in VLC with no issues.

So, I'm not sure what setting I should be using. I've never done this with a BluRay before.

Can anyone give me a shove in the right direction?

Here they are, if they will help. I just figure I was selecting the wrong box or something.

The 1st attempt with "Forced Only" checked:

[16:17:06] * subtitle track 1, English [PGS] (track 0, id 0x3, Picture) -> Passthrough, Forced Only
Most likely, there were no subtitles flagged as "forced" in the track, so you got an empty track. You should add a second track with the same track number, but the "forced only" box unchecked. Then you can switch to the second track to get the subtitles.

Thanks for the reply, I tried that and got 2 tracks but when I click either of them I still don't get any subtitles :? Very confusing...

So weird because I can turn them on/off from the source file in VLC so I know they are there. Trying it again with 1 subtitle track with PGS selected and none of the boxes checked.

Re: Subtitle Help

Post by Woodstock »

One of the possibilities for this is that there is a second, full subtitle track, but the scan portion of the log doesn't show anything but the one track.

Try another encode, only this time, enable the Foreign Audio Search as a track. Post the log for that. It only has to be one chapter, because the FAS takes place first.

FAS will enumerate the number and type of subtitles in each recognized track. If you can select the subtitles on/off with the source, the full set has to be there somewhere...

Here's the logs when I did it with the Foreign Audio Search as the track.
I didn't have any of the boxes checked so it only shows enable being true and then later it says it was skipped because "no suitable subtitle tracks"

Handbrake is seeing that there is a subtitle track, and it's tagged as English. Do your subtitle defaults include English as one of the languages to select by default?

The FAS is controlled by language. The usual case is that your selected audio language will be used to search the subtitle tracks. You've selected "eng" for audio, so FAS should also search for "eng".

Unofficially, this is weird.

I saw something about setting defaults but I don't see the "configure defaults" menu that is listed on the Handbrake documentation so I'm not sure how to access it. I've never changed any preferences in the program.

I've never had any kind of issue before, but yeah, this one beats me. My mom likes to watch British stuff when camping so I just wanted to load her a digital copy but she likes to have subtitles, never tried to do it with a BluRay before so I thought maybe it was something obvious I was missing, but maybe not.

The audio and subtitle tabs have a "defaults" button that will allow you to modify the rules used for automatic selections.
