vids are too dark

Post by lightnin4u »

Description of problem or question:
In the last time I have noticed, that my handbrake converted videos are too dark. First I thought the problem was in the player Software (Kodi on Shield TV). But now I took a comparison on my PC using VLC playing the converted file side by side with the original (ripped) DVD Image.
And the converted video is too dark here too! (see screenshots, left original, right encoded).

Try uploading your image to Drive or Dropbox; there is nothing in your logs to suggest a level difference.

I would start by doing the rip with something like MakeMKV, which would copy the video track without altering it. Then, compare the brightness of the resulting MKV to the MP4 file you asked handbrake to make.

I have seen instances where a player applies different rules to files vs. "raw optical reads" vs. ISO reads.

That was already dropbox link. Seems to be only a problem with the thumbnail. Try rightclicking and open image in new tab.
But anyways here is another try:

I have done so an did a rip with MakeMKV. This is also as dark as the handbrake'd version.

Looks like something may not be flagged correctly because nothing is handling it correctly. was it something you downloaded?
Unless you ripped it from the disc yourself, I see it as unlikely that you will ever know.
Anyway, the center image is the closest to correct for delivery.

Might see what MediaInfo says about your ISO.

As a bandaid, adding the fullrange=on command to your Advanced Options may be of help.

thanks a lot musicvid for your suggestions. I have ripped it by myself from the original disc (using AnyDVD, recent version).
Have tried fullrange=on too, same result...
Which kind of information from MediaInfo do you exactly want to see?
