Description of problem or question:

Question # 1: There are 4 episodes on a DVD I'm digitizing using HB. However, when playing back, they are all grouped together into one long m4v file. What setting do I need to change to have the episodes separated into individual episodes/files? HB shows 28 chapters in "Chapters" section and "Create Chapter Markers" box is checked.

Question # 2: After HB has completed, the file shows up as [Show Name] [Season] [Episode] in Windows (explorer), which is great. However, when I access it through my Western Digital WD MyCloud, every file is titled "stereo.mp4", which makes it impossible to tell which episode is which. Where is this information stored and how can I fix it to read the correct information?

You need to break the file apart on (usually) chapter boundaries. By forcing handbrake to act as a ripper (it is not), this will be slow. And ripping programs like MakeMKV may find individual episode files; I do not remember having to manually split the episodes out on Jag, but it's been several years since I did those disks.

As for the issue with the WD server picking up the wrong metadata, that was fixed in the nightly builds. I do think it was also in the current release version, 1.3.3.

Woodstock - thank you so much! I will update HB to hopefully fix the metadata moving forward.

As for the episodes, I did try MakeMKV for one disc and it did split them into episodes, but 1) subtitles were on each episode 2) it took quite a while and the resulting files were much bigger than the HB files. Something like 13GB total for one disk. I can't seem to find the perfect solution. If I could just get HB to break them out into episodes, it'd be perfect. Unfortunately, I am not clear on how to "break the file apart".

MakeMKV doesn't do any compression, but handbrake works well with those MKV files as input.

The issue with the subtitles being on by default is that many players take the first subtitle track that matches the current language selection, and play it. When you play the disk itself (or an ISO), the player uses the menu to control which subtitle tracks are active, but MKV files don't have menus, so...

One of the things I do is use VLC to find out which tracks have "forced" and "regular" subtitles, and then make sure the forced one is the FIRST one defined. And some disks have no forced subtitle track at all, so (for DVDs going to MP4 files) I tell handbrake to create a "forced only" track that will be empty.

So installed the most recent version of HB in hopes the metadata would carry over, but unfortunately it looks like if it did, WD MyCloud is not reading it. I figure we'll take it one issue at a time. Do you know how I can get the files to show up as the name it shows in Windows Explorer?

Most DLNA servers have to be forced to re-scan the data when you update a file. If it has a different name than the original, it will be picked up automagically, but the same name will retain the old metadata unless you hit it over the head with a clue bat.

I feel like the WD MyCloud is causing a lot of these problems, not to mention it constantly crashes while watching the episodes. There has to be a better product out there. Any suggestions on hardware?

Apple TV for the STB. Plex on whatever you want for streaming and storage.

I like Synology; I personally own 2 versions of their 8-bay server, my office has 2 8-bay servers, and a friend has an 8-bay and multiple 2-bay units. I use their media server software for DLNA, but Plex is also available for them. They run 24 hours a day, with typical (for me) uptimes measured in months.

But, they aren't in the same price range as the WD unit.

And, the part about forcing a re-scan for metadata changes still applies to Synology's DLNA software.

So the 4 episodes are a single title file. I'm guessing that it's something like Episode 1 Chapters 1-4, Episode2 Chapters 5-8, etc.? DVDShrink (freeware) will let you load the title file, and then let you manually select which chapters you want to rip. Just make a folder for each episode on your desktop, and separate them manually. It's a pit of a pain, trust me... I know, but sometimes it's how you have to do it.

HandBrake lets you specify chapter ranges as well. But you haver to do it manually using the corresponding drop-downs.

If I could just manually change the file name, that'd help a ton. As I mentioned previously, every file is titled stereo.mp4 on my TV interface even though in Windows explorer it shows the file name as example S5 D2, which is perfect.

Does anyone know where I can just simply manually change the name?

That's just an issue with metadata. Unfortunately there's no way to work around it with HandBrake.

BTW, I was able to find a freeware (Audio Shell) that fixes the naming issue. Just have to do it manually and then rebuild the DLNA database.

Don't let the name fool you... MP3Tag (freeware) with edit the ID3 tagging on just about anything, video included.
