Having looked at makemkv , it seems like there are a lot of issues with that software skipping anything under 120 seconds. I'm looking for less drama with my dubs, not more.

If you leave the stock settings, MakeMKV skips anything under 120 seconds, true... but if you open the Preferences->Video menu, you can set that minimum title length to anything (except negative numbers) you want.

If you want "less drama", it is better to use tools for what they are designed for. Ripping disks is not what handbrake is designed for, and forcing it to do so with 3rd-party add-ons adds drama each time something on your system (like operating system updates) breaks the links that make it work. Ripping tools for ripping disks, encoding tools for encoding the video more efficiently.

I would be VERY open to ideas for more appropriate (and easy) alternates. Handbrake was the software sugggested to me by experts at B&H in New York. And so far, I haven't found anything better.

HB is for converting videos.

Makemkv is for ripping DVD's.

Rip DVD, then encode video. Easy.

If the "experts at B&H in New York" were recommending handbrake for encoding, they are on the mark.

But if their recommendation was for ripping... They're over a decade out of whack. The 3rd-party library needed to make it happen can deal with DVD copy protection from 2010 and earlier; modern stuff can break it.

There are better, current tools for getting the data off the optical disk and on to your drive. These programs track copy protection methods pretty closely. And even there, different tools have different strengths. MakeMKV is what I use, but DVDFAB apparently works better at finding the correct movie title on obfuscated disks with dozens or hundreds of fake titles (I avoid buying those).

Using the tools separately gives you the ability to make multiple attempts at the encode, to get it "just right", also.

I tried downloading and purchasing DVDFab last night, but ran into a number of hurdles. And frankly, I was dubious of where I was about to send my payment info. Things seemed very sketchy. I'm at a loss to understand why someone who knows Handbrake can't just walk me through some basic adjustments for free or a few bucks. I mean it's generally worked fine over hundreds of dubs. It can be this much drama, can it>

Rip your DVD with makemkv (its free).

Then encode your video with HB.

Well, there can be a lot of reasons. At least in part, the people who really know handbrake have their hands full with developing AND doing their paying jobs. They don't charge for handbrake or accept donations for the project.

Others of us are cantankerous old bastards who spend our free time trying to get those damn kids off our lawns...

"Paid private support" helps one person, while open support through topics like this can help many.

I just registered to thank you for your basic and essential advice.
I was having trouble converting an old slide show DVD (.vob) to a more compatible MP4 using just Handbrake.
Google brought me here.
Unlike Ethan_H I took your advice and installed the free "makemkv" then converted the mkv to MP4 using Handbrake. "Very Nice Great Success."
I'm a total noob and these two programs are just too easy to use. Thank you.

I'm glad some people find it works for them. I remain at a loss why someone who knows this software well wouldn't be up for a few bucks (or more) to walk me through my problem. No one said it had to be top-secret. Happy to share the findings here. But if they're so worried about having "their hands full developing," wouldn't it help if they recognized and could help solve what is probably a simple problem? The snobbishness is getting old fast, and I don't care what age group someone is in. If someone wants to make some money and help solve a problem, contact me. If you want to be snarky, buzz off.
