Is this much difference in file size normal?

Post by cutter »

Description of problem or question:
The size of my 3000+ movie library collection got the better of me so I decided to experiment with other presets in order to find a better balance between acceptable movie quality and smaller size.
I used to transcode 1080p Remux movies to H.265 using the values of my previous preset "H.265 MKV 1080p30", with the only change from the default setting from RF 22 to RF16. Since I mainly use Apple TVs now, I decided to experiment with the "Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround" preset, just changing the container format from mp4 to mkv, and leaving the default RF value to 24.

I experimented with 3 films (I know; insignificant sample but still testing) but the results were:
Film 1: Remux 1080p Size: 27,5 GB, H.265 MKV 1080p30 RF16 Size: 9,5 GB, Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Size: 1,1 GB
Film 2: Remux 1080p Size: 12,6 GB, H.265 MKV 1080p30 RF16 Size: 11,6 GB, Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Size: 1,8 GB
Film 3: Remux 1080p Size: 21,4 GB, H.265 MKV 1080p30 RF16 Size: 11,7 GB, Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Size: 1 GB

Granted, I haven't actually watched the films end-to-end for artifacts but the result on my 55 inch TV from my normal viewing distance is perfectly acceptable! I know that in the end, the only thing that matters is if I'm satisfied with the end result; nobody else, but do the above sizes look legit to you given the provided settings?

If the files are not actually corrupt, I can definitely see myself transcoding everything from the original remuxes to the new preset. Thank you for your time.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
Hanbrake Version 1.3.3

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Do you have any of your old logs using RF 16?

Unfortunately not; it's been more than a year since the RF16 transcode.

Its hard to tell what you are doing differently without them.

You are also changing audio settings which will change file size.

Maybe redo one and post the log.

Moving from RF=16 to RF=24 is certainly going to make a big difference in file size. If the RF=24 video is OK with you, then it should be OK.

"Goodness" of an encode is in the eyes of the persons who will be watching it. Opinions of others are noise in that case.

I know it and I agree, Woodstock. It just struck me as extremely odd that I ended up with a perfectly viewable 1080p movie on a 55" TV with a size of 1GB. Although I use Handbrake for years, I mainly stick to the presets (with minor changes), so I don't really have the experience you guys have with it, so this came as a real surprise to me and thought of asking a second opinion.

Thank you and rollin_eng for your replies and your time.

Before you picked an RF that was widely considered too low for 1080p, now you're using a preset with an RF set much higher for 4K... no surprise you're getting very different results.
