Encoding freeze at 80% of chapter on Bluray no disc will not read

Post by proxlars »

Hello, I was utilizing Handbrake to rip m4v files from 5 chapters of a non-commercial, professional videographer produced Bluray disc with wedding footage. 4 of the 5 chapters created files smoothly. The last chapter, for whatever reason, seems to stop encoding around 80% and hangs there, no matter how long I wait. The encoding time is still increasing, there is just no progress being made. I have tried this 3-4 times with more or less the exact same similar result. My biggest problem at the moment, however, is that after its most recent hang up, I did what I did before and "stopped" the encoding, closed the program, open and removed the disc, etc. Now, I cannot get anything to read the bluray disc - not windows explorer, not VLC or Handbrake. While I still would like to encode this final chapter, my biggest concern is getting the disc to function again. Are there any tools/utilities/steps to be taken to help this disc be readable again? I never tried to write anything to it... what could Handbrake have done that might have affected the disc?:

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0): Version1.3.3 (2020061300)

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update): Windows 10 Pro Latest Update

HandBrake Activity Log ***required*** (see How-to get an activity log)

Code: Select all

There is no log to paste because my disc will no longer read to perform an action to log.

HandBrake has not done anything to your Disc or Drive. It doesn't support writing to discs so it can't do anything to a disc other than request that the drive read it.

In all likelyhood, either the drive has failed or the disc has a defect or dirt on it. If windows is now having problems, try another disc and see if it reads. That will give you a sheer towards whether it's a bad drive or bad disc.

I appreciate the insight... I have tried other CDs and DVDs in the drive, and they are working perfectly fine. I do not have another Bluray disc lying around to try at the moment - I'll have to get ahold of another one. I don't think it's a physical dirt/dust situation... the disc has been sitting in a case unusued for quite some time, and it has worked fine for the past 48 hours while I've ripped the other portions of the disc. And the drive is out of the box brand new, so I would hope it hasn't failed. I'll get a hold of another Bluray disc to try this afternoon. In the interim, are there any disc utility tools that can check the read tables of a bluray for errors? I'm aware of a dozen such tools for hard drives, but I have no idea if such a utility exists for bluray, or not.

Your old logs exist unless you have deleted them.

The logs for the files that completed successfully have a lot of detail and share the same file name as the finished encoded file, so they are easy to identify. There are a number of logs with generic names that I believe corespond to the times I tried to do the chapter that keeping hanging and failing, and all it says is:

"[15:05:09] Compile-time hardening features are enabled

And another one has:
