Saving defaults for Video, Audio and Subtitles

Post by tja »

Description of problem or question:

I am trying to convert lots of my DVDs to h.265 with a VBR of 3000, getting all available audio tracks and a selection of subtitles.
The DVDs, for example the M.A.S.H. series contain multiple episodes as tracks on each DVD.
My goal is to enter a DVD, press "go" and have all tracks converted.

But as it seems, my selection of languages does not get saved.
I tried to save the current setting as the default setting and also tried to create a new preset, including the "All matching selected languages".

In both cases, every time i enter a DVD, or just look at a different track of the same DVD, my language selection does not get honored.
And worse, it is deleted every time!
The "Selected languages" field is empty.

The same goes for the video.
I always select Fast 576p25 and then change the codec to h.265
And it resets every time!

I am either doing something completely wrong (and i did read the doc), or HandBrake does not work as i would expect.

Is there not way to set the defaults for Video, Audio and Subtitles in a way that it works for every DVD i inserts and applies to all tracks?

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

Not sure.
Just save some settings, exit Handbrake, enter a new DVD and check if Video, Audio and Subtitles are as selected the last time.

Re: Saving defaults for Video, Audio and Subtitles

Post by Woodstock »

Wrong work flow, if you're trying to do this efficiently.

Grab MakeMKV, and rip all the disks. You can use expert mode to pre-name episode files the way you want them.

Then you can use the Command Line Interface to make a batch file to process the MKVs all the same way, and let it churn alone.

Note: Using h265 for DVD content is generally a bad idea. You give up a lot of device compatibility for marginal improvements in compression when you go to h265 below 1080p output.

Many thanks, @Woodstock

I am going to check MakeMKV.

I have the M.A.S.H. series already ripped with "DVDShrink" if you this from old.
But this left me with VIDEO_TS folders which is less usable.

So I thought about ripping again, and directly with the best current Codec.
I did not know that 265 is not ideal for PAL content, thanks for that hint. So, I will choose 264 then, right?

But still, what I am doing wrong that Handbrake does not seem to save my defaults for Codec and other Video settings, or for Audio tracks or subtitle?
My fault?
A bug?

I wanted to edit for some misty ping, but cannot find the edit button.

I meant "if you know this from old" in regards to DVDshrink.

M*A*S*H is one series I haven't encoded. I gifted it to a friend for his birthday, and normally he'd have had me rip it and encode it, but I was busy doing all of the available Star Trek series (over 180 disks), so I told him he was on his own. Otherwise, I'd offer my encoding command line.

The big advantage to using MakeMKV is that you can get the ripping out of the way quicker (time you spend hovering over the computer to change disks), then let handbrake churn away over however long it needs to encode things "your way". Even if you decide to use h265, with its longer encode times, your time is the same. And since the files are on your local storage already, you can run multiple experiments more quickly to discover what "your way" is.

h265 has advantages with high-resolution sources or if you need to have minimal bit rates. The "sweet spot" seems to be when you go beyond 1080p destinations, unless you've got a slow connection between the server and the player.

As for saving defaults in the Graphic User Interface - you need to create your own presets for that. Presets do not remember absolutes; they remember behaviors, so it can be tricky to make specific things happen. Other than scripting the command line, you cannot say, "Always copy audio track one as an AC3 track" and have it stick. The GUI uses rules like "select English tracks and generate an copy it in AC3 format." The rules I use are more complex than that.

Once you have the rules to your likely, you save your settings as a new preset; you cannot overwrite the original ones. Give it a name, then you select it to use, and you can then use it for "batch add".

This one will be a bit off, because I have an audio encoder (fdk_aac) that isn't available in "stock" handbrake, and is from when I was ripping Star Trek: Enterprise.

Code: Select all

title %time% "%~n1 M4V" & "C:\Program Files\Handbrake\HandBrakeCLI.exe" -i "Z:\Star Trek\Enterprise\%~n1.mkv" -t 1 -o "V:\tv series\Star Trek\Enterprise\%~n1.m4v" -f mp4 -O --detelecine --decomb="bob" -w 720 --crop 0:0:0:0 --loose-anamorphic --modulus 2 -e x264 -q 22 --vfr -a 1,2 -E copy:ac3,fdk_aac -6 none,dpl2 -R Auto,48 -B 0,160 -D 0,0 --gain 0,0 --audio-fallback ac3 --subtitle 1,1 --subtitle-forced 1 --markers="C:\Users\main\AppData\Local\Temp\%~n1-1-chapters.csv" --verbose=1 2>> z:\stenterprise.log
This was in a batch file called "STENT.BAT", which was called for each MKV file I'd ripped, like this:

Code: Select all

call stent.bat "Star Trek Enterprise S1 E01-02 Broken Bow.mkv"
Windows CMD provides argument macros that are relatively close to what bash has on Linux and MacOS. %~n1 is "argument one stripped of file extension", so it could be used to access the MKV file and give its name to the output MP4 file.

There is some trickery going on with the subtitles so that an empty track would be first; some players think the chapter markers are subtitles, and display them instead of real subtitles.

May i add a question about MakeMKV?

I set the "preferred language" and this resulted in only one audio track and only one subtitle track.
At least i assume that this was the reason for that result.

I would like to get any and all audio tracks from the DVDs and at least some of the subtitles.

How to achive this?

I tried to rip again, this time with "None" as preferred language and this seems to do the trick!

So now, i am going to delete all of my DVDshrink folders and rip all 11 * 3 = 33 DVDs again :-O

Thanks for that hint about MakeMKV and the command line!

Yeah, MakeMKV's language preferences are not as good as handbrake's. If you set a preferred language in MakeMKV and there is no track for that language, it will skip all audio. Sometimes a bit difficult to explain to people...

Several of us have asked for the ability to give a list... The author hasn't responded to that. But, it is possible to make a selection string that does it. Details are in the advanced section of their forum.

You're welcome!

@woodstock, I am trying my first run :-D

The movie Dogma:

/cygdrive/c/Program\ Files/Handbrake/HandBrakeCLI.exe -i title_t00.mkv -o Dogma.m4v -Z "General/Fast 576p25" -m -e x264 -f av_mp4 -b 3000 -2 -T -r 25 --all-audio -B 160 -A Dogma --subtitle-lang-list de,eng --all-subtitles --detelecine --decomb="bob" -w 720 --crop 0:0:0:0 --loose-anamorphic --verbose=1 > Dogma.log

I took this from your command:

-O --detelecine --decomb="bob" -w 720 --crop 0:0:0:0 --loose-anamorphic

Not sure if i realy need those, but i just did as you said :-D

But I needed to remove the "-O" option to optimize for fast HTML start, as this changed the contained to "webm" ...

Or are you saying that "webm" is the right thing?

I also did not increase the quality to 22 for now ...

And finally, i set the target bitrate to 3000 ... not sure why :-D

Just looking how this goes.

Any hint appreciated :-)

You don't need -O if you're going to MKV or Webm (same container with more limited codec support), because it's a MP4-thing. I don't use Webm, because the video codec takes much longer to encode than h264. When my target is MKV, I use -f mkv instead.

DVD video is interlaced and often telecined, so decomb and detelecine should be used.

-q 22 for DVD sources is usually sufficient. Going to -20 doesn't gain you much quality, but -24 starts to get obnoxious to me with artifacts.

Setting a bit rate while using -q quality-based encoding I think gets cancelled out... I don't remember, because I rarely set bit rate limits, other that as tests.

Just think of this as a game that doesn't cost a lot of money to play. You can play with settings to see what makes YOU happy, rather than what makes ME happy. :)

As you mentioned the quality setting....

This is my greated concern.

At best i want the FULL quality of the DVD, of course.
Just in smaller files because of a better codec.
PAL is alread small and old and bad enough, right?

I am sorry to ask such many question, but the "help" output from the command or the respective website simply lists options, but no explanation.
And i am missing the knowledge to understand what is best to use.

Finally, i want the best possibly copy of my DVDs - it´s a lot of work and time, after all.
I think many try to achive exactly that.

And yes, encoding time plays a role, but it is not *such* important.
When i get 10% smaller for only 50% longer encoding time with some change in the options, thats totally fine with me.
For 10% smaller, if would not like to need double as long ...

And as you said, it is a "game".
But i hope to get some hints on that way :-)

If you want, you can limit what is encoded during testing. Adding, for example, -c 3 will only encode chapter 3 of the video you're playing with. Pick a chapter that has a fair amount of motion and detail as your target, to have the "worst case" test.

My current experiment:

Code: Select all

$ cat mkv2m4c.bat
"c:\Program Files/Handbrake/HandBrakeCLI.exe" ^
-i %~n1.mkv ^
-o %~n1.m4v ^
-A %~n1 ^
-t 1 ^
rem video codec ^
rem -Z "General/Fast 576p25" ^
-Z "General/Super HQ 576p25 Surround" ^
-m ^
-e x264 ^
-f av_mp4 ^
-O ^
-q 19 ^
rem audio settings ^
--audio-lang-list de,eng --all-audio -6 stereo ^
rem subtitle settings ^
--subtitle-lang-list de,eng --all-subtitles ^
rem PAL video ^
--detelecine --decomb="bob" -w 720 --crop 0:0:0:0 --loose-anamorphic ^
rem Logfile ^
--verbose=1 2>> %~n1.log

rem Not needed:
rem --modulus 2
rem --audio-fallback ac3

rem Unclear settings for audio or subtitles:
rem -a 1,2
rem -E copy:ac3,fdk_aac
rem -6 none,dl12
rem -R Auto,48
rem -B 0,160
rem -D 0,0
rem --gain 0,0
rem --subtitle 1,1
rem --subtitle-forced 1

rem Not documented setting:
rem --markers="C:\...\*.csv"
As you see, i do not understand the tricks you did with the audio tracks and subtitles ...
I see that it is done by having 2 options, one for each track or subtitle, separated by a comma.
This seems to be for 2 tracks.
But i do not understand, if this is required or possible when i always add two languages to the list of audio and subtitle tracks.

And the option to "--markers" seems to be undocumented ....
At least https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/1.3.0/cli/ ... rence.html does not show an argument to this option.
Does the command read something from the file or does it write into it?

You sureley hate me already, sorry ;-)

I did not like the quality from my tests and used the above Super HQ 576 which was OK:

$ ls dogma.mkv dogma.m4v
-rwxrwx---+ 1 tja None 5837508591 May 24 14:51 dogma.mkv*
-rwxrwx---+ 1 tja None 1233595857 May 25 02:13 dogma.m4v*

The frame rate of the MKV file is exactly 25, as from the DVD.
But the frame rate of the M4V / MP4 from HandBrakeCLI is 24.964370, as seen by VLC.
This seems to be NTSC, not PAL.
So there seem to be a bug in the HQ preset?

It´s frustrating to be honest.
Simply making the best copy from a DVD should not be so hard, or?

I added a manual -r 25 and --vfr

But there are more problems.

The MKV contains a german and an english stream.

I cannot get this to copy with HandBrakeCLI at all.
There are always 2 german streams (one stereo, one surround), no english stream.
I tried serveral variants, including trying to copy the original audio.
No no avail.

The latest version:

Code: Select all

"c:\Program Files/Handbrake/HandBrakeCLI.exe" ^
-i %~n1.mkv ^
-o %~n1.m4v ^
-A %~n1 ^
-t 1 ^
-c 1 ^
rem video codec ^
-Z "General/Super HQ 576p25 Surround" ^
-m ^
-e x264 ^
-f av_mp4 ^
-O ^
-q 19 ^
-r 25
--vfr
rem audio settings ^
rem --audio-lang-list deu,eng --all-audio -6 stereo ^
--audio-lang-list deu,eng --all-audio ^
-E copy:ac3,aac ^
rem subtitle settings ^
--subtitle-lang-list deu,eng --all-subtitles ^
--subtitle-default=none ^
--subtitle-burned=none ^
rem PAL video ^
--detelecine --decomb="bob" -w 720 --crop 0:0:0:0 --loose-anamorphic ^
--verbose=1 2> %~n1.log

Last try looks better, even as i am not sure that i need to preserve the 5.1 surround sound:

Code: Select all

"c:\Program Files/Handbrake/HandBrakeCLI.exe" ^
-i %~n1.mkv ^
-o %~n1.m4v ^
-A %~n1 ^
-c 1 ^
rem video codec ^

-e x264 ^
-f av_mp4 ^
-O ^
rem -q 19 ^
-r 25 ^
--vfr ^
rem audio settings ^
--audio-lang-list deu,eng --all-audio ^
-B 160 ^
rem subtitle settings ^
--subtitle-lang-list deu,eng --all-subtitles ^
--subtitle-default=none ^
--subtitle-burned=none ^
rem PAL video ^
--detelecine --decomb="bob" -w 720 --crop 0:0:0:0 --loose-anamorphic ^

Re: Saving defaults for Video, Audio and Subtitles

OK.

It seems that the documentation is totally missing or simply wrong.

I tried:

--audio-lang-list deu,eng ^
--first-audio ^
-6 stereo ^
-B 160 ^

And this resulted in 3 audio tracks:

1: german, down to 160 kbps, not sure, but 32 bit?!?
2: german, surround sound with 448 kbps, 16 bit
3: english, down to 162 kbps, 16 bit

The decriptions says, that by default the first matching track for each selected language will be added.
Wrong

And then "--first-audio" which seems to say the same, so added it.
As expected, letting this away, gave the same results.
Wrong.

I can only assume that this comes from the fact that i used a HQ preset with surround sound.
But the documentation does not make clear how to choose options to get this under control!

So, i tried "--audio-lang-list deu" with "--first-audio", which should surely only result on one audio track.
But i provided 2, both german.
Wrong.

The command line documentation is wrong or massively lacking.
I even checked the output of the command itself, as this is 1.3.2 while the website seems to be from 1.3.0

I then search the internet and found numerous similar problems, like this:

https://github.com/HandBrake/HandBrake/issues/1253

And even the recommendation from bradleysepos in this forum are off-documentation or wrong!
He writes "--audio-lang-list=eng", but the syntax seems to be "--audio-lang-list eng"!
And "--audio=aac,copy" does not work at all!
And they are not even allowed together, as the log shows:

"Incompatible options: --audio-lang-list and --audio"

Maybe things changed from 2018?
But still, i see no way to reach my goals:

1. Copy the "first" track for each selected language, mixdown any source as 160 kpbs stereo

This should result for Dogma in 2 tracks, not 3.

2. For movies where the surround sound is important, copy any and all "first" surround tracks and also mixdown a stereo version at 160 kbps.

Only the first, to not get 2 or 3 different surround codecs. One should suffice.

You don´t want to see or accept this, but the documentation needs to be fixed if similar questions and frustrated users shall be avoided. It is simply not clear what is possible, what is not possible and how it can be achived.

And the same is true for the GUI version - which lead me to this forum initially.
It simply does not work as expected.

I stop for now, as nearly full 3 days to find a way to copy PAL DVDs is too much.
I need a break.
