Need Help With Audio Codecs - What to choose?

Post by VikenK »

Description of problem or question:
Hello All,

New Handbrake User. Have been using HandBrake to rip my DVD's successfully. I'm ripping the movies to be played back on my TV through a PlayStation 3 using Serviio as my media server. The audio goes through a Yamaha Home Theater Receiver. So Far, DVD's haven't been an issue. However, Blu-Rays are another story. I'm really confused about all the codecs and what to choose. AC-3, AAC, AAC(avcodec), it's all confusing to me. I seem to have hit/miss results. What seemed to work for DVD's is not working for Blu-Rays. Also, Blu-Rays seem to have dozens of titles and multiple versions of the main title, making it hard to choose the right one.

I'm using Make MKV to rip the Blu-Ray then encoding with Handbrake. My File format is M4V.

My goal is to rip the best available original Audio soundtrack and have a mix-down to 5.1. As a test, I ripped three Blu-Rays: Sucker Punch, Jumanji/Next Level, and Frozen 2. These discs have DTS or DTS HD-MA and also AC-3.

I chose to encode three tracks DTS, DTS HD-MA and AC3, each using "Auto Passthrough" in my Audio selection since that seems to be the best way to preserve the lossless audio Bitstream.

When viewed on my PC with VLC viewer all seemed OK. When the same file was viewed with Windows 10 Movie Player, I got video but no audio. When imported to Serviio and played to the TV I also got video but no audio. I tried encoding a second time and seemed to get audio but it was a Dolby Digital Signal when it should have been DTS. Then I tried to play a straight MKV file of Sucker Punch on the TV and I was able to get audio but it seemed to be a Dolby Digital stream and not DTS. When I played the converted M4V Sucker Punch I got video but no audio.

So...What settings should I use in Handbrake to achieve my goal? If I can verify that I'm using the right settings, I'll be able to better determine if my limitation is the encoding, the Serviio media server or the PlayStation.

So I add all the English tracks. I usually end up with three audio streams. DTS, DTS-HD MA, and AC3, each one with Auto Passthrough as my choice. Is that incorrect? Should I use Auto-Passthough? Should I use AAC (AVcodec)? AAC Passthrough?

My head is spinning...

As this relates to a specific encode, post the encoding log.

I'll be glad to oblige but it'll take me some time to get what you need since I have deleted a lot of the files and movies already.

However, my main question still revolves around what settings are best to use to encode the audio properly and with most compatibility. In my mind, my question is not specific to one movie or one encode but a general setting to use to make sure I get the most consistent audio results. I want to be able to start each encode not wondering if I used the right audio encoder or pass-through.

Which audio tracks you use depends entirely on your playback hardware/software. AC3 seems to be played by more devices, since it's the codec used with DVDs. Some people have "no audio" if they don't include an AC3 track.

So would it be best to have a DTS (or Dolby Digital) track with "Auto PassThrough" and the same DTS (or DD) track with AAC Encoding?

Hello All,

OK. Below is the encode log for "Jumanji: he Next Level". This is one that has DTS-HD MA track. When I view it on the Serviio Browser on my PC I get no Volume. When I try to change the Audio Track, I get an error in Serviio that says "HTML5: Video File not Found". This makes my think that the audio track is tied to the video track. This is one of the Blu Rays that has multiple copies of the main feature title. When analyzing the disk I see about 7 "Jumanji" titles, each with a matching length and ~27GB file size.

When I view this on my TV through the Playstation 3 I get no sound and I am unable to change the audio track. In fact, if I try to change the audio track It may lock up my PS3.

Re: Need Help With Audio Codecs - What to choose?

Post by Woodstock »

Yeah, the PS is rather limited in its codec support.

My hardware isn't quite so limited, but I generally convert DTS and DTS-HD to AC3 as the first audio track, AAC for the second, and pass through DTS for the third. The AAC encoder in handbrake isn't the best, but some devices prefer it over AC3, so I keep it available.

In Theory (that mythical town in Michigan where things work like the specifications say they do), passing the DTS-HD MA track through to the output should be enough for any DTS-compatible decoder, but I don't live in Theory. So I pass the DTS and DTS-HD though as separate tracks.
