Musical notation.. .song lyrics

Post by Charvelx04 »

Description of problem or question:

Musical notation, where the musical symbol (single note) at both ends of text, will not appear in encoded video.
Musical notation, where the musical symbol is ONLY at the beginning of the text, will appear in encoded video.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

When adding lyrics to music videos, whether created by another, or new subs created with Subtitle Edit.. will only appear in videos played with VLC, as long as the ending line of each lyric does not include the musical notation.

♪ Kelly won't kiss my friend, Cassandra - Does work

I will post the "failed" text from the log file in first post... and the log file from the successful encode in the first reply. Note: doesn't matter what encoder I choose in HB.. nothing from x264 w/wout NVEnc.. to x265. All have that same issue. All subtitles I create are saved as UTF-8 (without BOM).

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

P.S.
I read a few other forum threads here, and the link to the Github convo on the subject... seems no solution has been posted.

So.. just curious to see if one is there, or can be achieved. :)

Oh.. .not sure if this information matters.

If a subtitle is created and named the same as the video and placed in the folder with the video, regardless of song lyrics having one or two notations, VLC will read them without issue.

It's only when you go to soft/hard encode them to the movie/video that you have to remove the notation at the end of the text.

Taken from this forum post:

Code: Select all

https://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=39616&p=187309&hilit=music+notes#p187309
JohnAStebbins asked:
"Does the same problem exist if you output to mkv instead of mp4?"

The answer is no.

I tested three video files.. each to mp4, and mkv using srt files that have the music notes at both ends of the text. Only the mkv passed. Each file still had an option to select a subtitle in VLC, but mp4 wouldn't show it.

Not a priority for Handbrake, I understand.. just hope it helps if someone does want to resolve it.

Thanks.

When writing to an MKV file, handbrake can pass the SRT file through. But MP4 files do not allow SRT; the have their own text subtitle format, so the SRT needs to be change.

Further question: If you have handbrake burn the subtitles in to the MP4, are the notes there in the video? That would indicate whether they survived the first part of the conversion.

I have yet to try a different subtitle format other than SRT. I guess I could try another.. so long as the text file is UTF, and not ANSI.. as the latter doesn't support musical notes at all. It shows those as asterisks or pound signs.

I can also try a hard coded subtitle burn as you suggested. All my encodes I burn are soft coded.

Lemme try that and post back.

I prefer MP4s.. because of how I sort them in Explorer. By either name, or comments. These can easily be changed in Explorer thru the Details tab, whereas MKVs require third party apps in order to change the metadata. I just ripped The Rise of Skywalker using MKV in order to keep the 7.1 surround sound, but the title on VLC shows "Main Feature #3" instead of "The Rise of Skywalker" which it would have, if I could have easily changed the title properties.

Confirmed.

If I choose the option to hard code (burn in) the subtitles, than SRT works.. and shows the subs as created in the MP4 container.

Now.. to figure out what format subs need to be for HB to soft code them and work. Shouldn't take too long, there's only a thousand or so to sort thru.

:)

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, Woodstock.

Okay...

I tried the three types of subs that HB allows in the selection list.
.ASS, .SSA and of course .SRT.

None of which show up if soft coded.

So.. for now, my workaround will just be either hard coding music videos with the subs.. or just leave the subs in the same folder as the videos and allow VLC to read them as is.

I'll check back periodically if anyone else has any other suggestions.

Much appreciated.

Final testing results.

I managed to get the .SRT files to work completely within the .MP4 container. However, it wasn't Handbrake I used.. it was another free encoder.

I rarely do subs for music videos, but more for TV shows. Most of which will have a theme song. So.. at least now in my [Censored] of tools, I can use what I need to get things done.

I'd like to refer back to this site page:

Code: Select all

https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/1.0.0/advanced/subtitles.html
"SRT Passthru

SRT Subtitles can also be passed through from input video files.
SRT are converted to SSA for the output."

Mentioned earlier, it was stated that the pass-through was for MKV, and not MP4.. so this might be a little confusing for anyone else looking this up that doesn't make it here. Confuses me.

But.. as I stated, not a priority, so if any of the developers ever get bored some time and care to figure out why HB doesn't do this, I'll keep an eye out.

Cheers. :)
