Movie size differences

Description of problem or question:
Using the Super HQ 1080p preset on 2 bluray movies ripped using the same version of makemkv, the finished sizes are incredibly different. I expect a bit of a difference but the movie "1917" finished at 5gb while the 2nd movie, "Knives Out", finished at 18gb. Initially, both movies were over 30gb. Does anything in the logs indicate why such a huge difference in the finished sizes? BTW, both finished movies look great. Also, if by looking at the logs anyone sees a spec that could be improved it would be appreciated. I'm looking for the highest video quality at a reasonable size. And 18gb's is fine. Just curious about the different sizes. 1st post so I apologize in advance for any errors. thanks

That's what quality based encoding does. Umpteen threads on this.

There are many things the affect final file size when using quality based encoding. Duration, grain and other types of video noise, complex scenery and motion. It's completely normal to have file size differences of this magnitude. But if the difference is due to some type of noise, I usually apply the NLMeans filter to reduce the noise and reduce the file size.

I had the same question and made the assumption in the responses - content affects the degree of compression. I also Super HQ 1080p except change framerate to 'Same as source' and use Constant Framerate instead of Variable. Handbrake version 1.3.1.

The two movies that jumped out at me with vast differences:

Draft Day - source = 28,330,752 KB --> mkv output = 6,897,637 KB

More perplexing to me is that processing the exact same movie with the exact same settings will produce slightly output sizes even on the same machine. Different machines produce a larger variation in size with the same move and Handbrake settings. I've been benchmarking with a 10th gen Intel notebook along with I7-4770k, I7-5960x and AMD 3950x desktop machines.

The difference for the same movie with the same settings on different systems is a few bytes, nothing significant.
If you're seeing significant differences, you're using different settings.
