HB mkv with side-bars shows stretched on TV; fine in vlc

Description of problem or question:
- I ripped a DVD with MakeMKV 1.15.0
- I put the resultant mkv through HB 1.3.1 (I put the RF too high - I thought lower was the way to get smaller size; it's the opposite)
- I view the HB mkv in vlc => looks fine; it has black bars on the sides
- I view the DVD in vlc => looks fine; it has black bars on the sides
- I view the HB mkv on my TV - Vizio => it's stretched to fill the screen; no black bars on side

Questions:
- Is this a flaw maybe with the DVD, or should I have used a preset instead of the "old" settings I remembered?
- I rememember some posts a few years back about 3/2-pulldown. Is this maybe the problem I am seeing?

Is your TV set to zoom to "fit" or "fill", rather than maintaining the aspect ratio? If so, it's going to stretch the video in weird ways to keep from displaying letterboxing.

It has 4 settings: zoom, widescreen, normal, stretch

I tried normal and widescreen before my op. No effect.

I mixed them after HB with MKVToolnix - will check if I maybe hosed settings, although I think not since shows good in vlc.

I haven't ripped a disc in a few years - since I finished ripping them all. But I bought 2 DVDs recently. I posted about one in the OP. For the other, this one should also have black bars on the side, and it actually does.

Anyway, here is the HB log for that one. Encodes were done on different systems, but they are very close to the same exact hw/sw build. The only diff I could see was the log below had multi-threading enabled. The OP did not. Not sure why that is.

I couldn’t get these encoded mkvs to display properly on a vizio d405/g9 tv using anamorphic settings.

As a quick fix, I te-encoded without cropping. I removed the anamorphic setting. Not optimal, but it displays properly on the Visio tv now.

Btw - I would say this is a limitation with the vizio tv. The mkv’s in the op played and displayed fine in vlc, jriver mc 26. The dvd displayed properly on the vizio.

This particular model must not be reading an mkv flag properly.
