"No valid titles found" after log says "6 valid titles found" / json pack failure: NULL object

Post by dvdcollector »

Description of problem or question:

I attempted to scan a certain DVD. I do not know whether it has copy protection - old opera performance DVDs often do not have this, but sometimes do - but in any case, libdvdcss2 is in the installation folder and this installation has worked for ~ 60 DVDs of this kind so far.
For this particular DVD, the end result popup after the scan process says "no valid titles found".
But the log says, 6 valid titles found. And then there is some sort of exception at the end: json pack failure: NULL object.
The DVD surface looks fine. The DVD drive is pretty new / rarely used.
The DVD plays fine in my bluray player.

So, what is true now, what's going on?

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

... only happens with that one DVD

Can you confirm that Tools -> Preferences -> Advanced -> "Number of picture previews to scan" is set to 10?

I do wonder if it's also related to the erroneous audio tracks. You may need to use MakeMKV or similar to take care of this. libdvdcss is not recommended as it often causes problems.

Yep it's 10.
I'll look at that software, thanks.

Tried MakeMKV.

i got the log down below.
Weird: not seen but heard: maybe 15 seconds before it gave up, the program seemed to open and close again the drive bay, at least that's what it sounded like.

Hm. maybe the DVD really has problems. I have not watched it in full, only skimped. But it looks fine to the eye.

Code: Select all

MakeMKV v1.14.7 win(x64-release) started
Using direct disc access mode
Complex multiplex encountered - 38 cells and 11126 VOBUs have to be scanned. This may take some time, please be patient - it can't be avoided.
Title #1 (2:40:32) was skipped due to navigation error
Title #2 has length of 62 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
Title #3 has length of 70 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
Title #4 has length of 87 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
Title #5 has length of 57 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
Title #6 has length of 10 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped

There is a difference between "titles found" and "valid titles found". In MakeMKV's case, 5 of the titles were "too short", so they were ignored. The default 30 second length on handbrake would have rejected one of the files in your list.

From what MakeMKV said, when it tried to find all the pieces of the main title, some of them weren't accessible (navigation error). That is probably what is tripping up handbrake, as well. Is this a DVD-R disk, or a regular commercial "pressed" disk?

It's a commercial one. The underside, with an inscription of a media company on the innermost ring, seems to indicate it, even though I forgot what a burned one looks like. (just to indicate I wasn't sold a fake, which could have been a possibility)

Some low-volume disks are released on DVD-R media, which has a relatively dark "dye" layer. But usually they'll say that on the packaging, and there will be a pronounced difference between the "burned" and "unburned" parts of the disk.

Sometimes, authors of DVD-R disks, though, won't properly "close" the directory structure, which can lead to navigation errors. But that shouldn't happen if the disk is a pressed disk; it would have been checked before the master was cut.

Unfortunately, just skipping around in a player might not find navigation errors. I'd put it on play and check it periodically that it hasn't dropped back to the menu before the 2:40 mark. Listening to it as background music, you might notice a glitch in places.

Interestingly, I've found that inscriptions on the inner ring is a good indicator of a bootleg. Genuine discs usually don't have this, but a lot of bootleg do.

Guys, you may be right. I looked at this closer... and the border region from the printed on stuff to the part where there is no print, e.g. at the very top, very slightly right of the image, there is some white...adhesive?? oozing out, and the graphics seem unusually coarse:

Damn. I never had this before. I think, lol. Anyway, no problems ever.

I have found another used copy that's not insanely expensive and ordered it.
When it arrives, I will compare..
