why is Apple TV not a preset anymore?

Post by CluelessInSeattle »

Description of problem or question:

There is no problem with the program that I know of, I just can't get my movie to play on Apple TV. I ripped a dvd on Apple 2160 (I did not know any better at the time) and I could not get it to play appropriately on either iTunes or Apple TV. I ran that file thru as Apple 1080p60 and I finally got it to show up in iTunes but as a home movie... I changed it to movie in its options and then it showed up in my iTunes movie list and played correctly. However, I still cannot get it to play on my Apple TV. Am I doing it wrong? I am tech savvy to a point but not this. Should I get a legacy version to do this or can we add it back? Halp please! (And thank you)

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

version 1.3.1

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Windows 10 Home, version 1903

I did try re-writing the original file as 1080p30 and it did not work. That's why I wanted to run it from the dvd, just in case.

Handbrake does not do ripping-from-DVD unless you add a (non-supported) 3rd-party library. If you have updated anything on your system since you last installed the add-on, it's probably broken.

There are tools intended for ripping, like MakeMKV. After you rip the disk to MKV files, you can endlessly experiment with the different Apple presets to see which ones work best for YOUR tastes, encoding just a chapter at a time to compare.

Hmmm, that is weird considering I did like, 150 dvds til all this went down... I didn't download anything extra because I don't know anything about this stuff.

Handbrake has not had official support for ripping DVDs for 11+ years now. The old way (installing a DLL file from videolan.org) works after a fashion, but it is unreliable; it does not support newer copy protection schemes. The log shows that it's not currently configured to work:
libdvdread: Encrypted DVD support unavailable.
libdvdread: Can't open D:\ for reading
libdvdread: Device D:\ inaccessible, CSS authentication not available.
There's even an unofficial way to use MakeMKV as a replacement library, which also adds Bluray support, but... Like the videolan.org library, things like installing operating system updates have a history of breaking the linkage for no apparent reason.

The most reliable method is to use a disk ripper to put the files on your local hard drive, with the copy protection already removed. And you can rip more disks while handbrake works on previous ones. It's really the fastest way to deal with more than one disk per session. And once the video is on your disk, experimenting to find what works best for you goes quickly.

BradleyS's recommendation of the Apple 1080p30 Surround preset as a starting point is solid advice, since he's been one of the driving forces in creating the presets. For DVD sources, there are small advantages to the lower-resolution versions, because of the interlacing found on DVDs.
