4:3 to 16:9 conversion help

Post by mjasinski3 »

Hello. I am converting hi8 tapes from a "Sony ccd-trv81 ntsc" that were recorded using the "16:9wide" mode in the camera in 2004. When converted to the computer it shows up as 4:3 (720x480) (very tall people). How do I convert the files so it doesn't loose any data but show in 16:9.

I understand I can:
1. turn anamorphic off
2. uncheck "keep aspect ratio"
3. change "display size to 640x360" but that deletes data.

Pic for reference: https://www.dropbox.com/s/zq8psctdokoo0 ... 2.jpg?dl=0

Thanks in advance! Mike.
(sorry if this has been discussed but it wouldn't let me search for 4:3)

That sounds like it may be an early "fake widescreen" shooting format, of which there were a few. Upload an original sample to Drive or Dropbox and ill play with it.

Thank you. I sent a DM with a link to 2 small files. Please let me know if it was received ok. Thanks again!

It is a button, and the video was always distorted in camera... it had to be "fixed" on the tv using a zoom mode. Here are the instructions from the manual on that mode. Specs didn't list anything about resolution (not really a thing then). It does has a s-video output so atlas that signal is cleaner.

Do custom anamorphic, set the aspect ratio to keep the height and be 16/9 wide.

I'm unable to change the ratio if I do keep and custom.https://www.dropbox.com/s/gj298c3221dnb ... 0.jpg?dl=0

If you're trying to change the aspect ratio, then the "keep aspect ratio" checkbox is NOT for you ;)

It is fake 16:9 from an early camcorder, similar to the one I had.
Optimum de-anamorphic is like this:

Thank you!

i cant get it to set the storage width to 720, it auto reverts to 712.
When i put in 854, it sets the PAR to 854x712.
I also have a display size height, but that stays 480.

In the end the output looks to be exactly 16x9.

I'm using the latest HB version and starting with the preset/general/fast480p30.

I wish i could figure out how to embed images here...

https://www.dropbox.com/s/n1e94auf0h12o ... 5.png?dl=0 maybe it works here in firefox instead of safari.

My screen capture is from the current 1.31.
What version of Handbrake is that?

Maybe some slight version differences, but it sounds like you've got the idea.

You can't set the storage to 720, because you are cropping 4 pixels left and 4 pixels right.

what's weird about the auto cropping, sometimes its cropping out 4 each side, sometimes not... the one posted yesterday at 10.16p did not. using the same video file. just an error I guess.

thanks so much for everyones help.
