H.264 AMD VCE encoder info?

Post by bctf1 »

Description of problem or question:
The only documentation I can find for the H.264 AMD VCE encoder is https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/latest/tec ... o-vce.html in Handbrake documentation. I am encoding large .mkv files at QP22 in Windows 10 v1909 using Handbrake 1.3.1.

I have been experimenting with this codec on a Ryzen 5 2600 computer with a Radeon RX 570 GPU. It seems to offer acceptable video quality while reducing encoding time compared to my usual H.264 codec by over 70% and the codec is averaging 70 - 80 fps in the process. The added benefit of VCE is that my cpu is not running at 75C - 78C along with my 4 case fans and cpu fan running at 100% rpm for the total duration of the encoding process.

The encoder preset 3 options of speed, baseline and quality seem to produce very little difference in the encoded file. I can't find any information about the encoder profile options of baseline, main and high pictured below. Nor can I find any info on the encoder level options of auto and 1.0 - 5.2 pictured below. Any information about these options would be very much appreciated.

H.264 Levels: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_ ... ing#Levels

We don't have any documentation on the encoder presets, so it's essentially a blackbox. That said, the hardware is very limited so I doubt they really do an awful lot.

P.s if your hitting 78C on a 2600, you might want to take a look at the CPU cooler. That's not normal.

Thank you s55 for the link for H.264 Levels. I am using the supplied Wraith Stealth cooler on the 2600 along with 4 case fans. My research indicates that these temperatures are not uncommon for this cpu at full load.

Before experimenting with AMD VCE, my usual preset was H.264 MKV QP22, framerate - same as source (constant), 2-pass encoding, encoder preset - slower, encoder tune - Film, encoder profile - High, encoder level - 4.1 and advanced options - ref=5:bframes=5. This preset always runs the cpu at 100% for the duration of the encoding process but produces very good video quality.

Any idea where I might get more info on the VCE encoder profile options of baseline, main and high pictured below?

baseline main and high are just standard H.264 profiles also listed in the link above.
