Subtitles as an option with Plex?

Post by mrcapi937 »

Handbrake Current Version: 1.3.1
Windows 10
Blue Ray uploading to cloud then playing on Plex

Newbie here, I am sure this is some were on here already but I couldn’t find it.

I am wanting the option to select subtitles when playing back on Plex media server.
When I am transcodeing now it either burns in the subtitles with out an option to turn off or I can transcode with no subtitles and not option to play them.

Can some one give me the settings I would use if I want the subtitles available to play as an option on play back?

Also any links or suggestions for the best overall settings to use for Handbrake to balance compression and quality with subtitles optional for upload and play back would be great.

Thanks

As this relates to a specific encode, post a support thread with the requisite details.

Your latter question is incredibly subjective and personalized. The preset that most closely matches your intended playback environment and personal tradeoffs is the best recommendation we can give to such a varied question.

This is not to a specific encode. Its with all the encoding I am doing. I can burn in the subtitle or I have to ignore the subtitle and not have one to use. When I use Make MKV to copy to my harddrive, I can play it back and select a subtitle from the menu on play back. After I transcode with handbrake its burned in and I can't turn it off. If I trancode it with out the subtitle, I have no option to turn it on.

Maybe this is impossible with handbrake or transcodeing. I don't know I am new. Just wandering if I am wasting my time with handbrake or if there is another program that can encode and allow subs to be turned on and off during playback. General question.

You should configure the subtitles behaviour to passthru all the subtitles tracks, and disable the "foreign language" pass and all the burn options.

The general answer to your general question, is yes it can be done.

Oh it's most certainly not impossible, but there's a lot of possibilities in how it's going to work. Rather than wasting our time describing every possibility (which you could well research on your own), if you post the logs detailing your specific situation we can provide guidance for you.

May not be possible or useful with OP's choice of subs and container. If only we had some consistent and complete way of documenting those choices...

Here are my logs on the most recent encode. My preference would be to have all subs available, then select the language sub when I play. This file is a little grainy. I just used the presets and encoded it. When I play with widows media player there are no subs with these settings. I really appreciate your support! Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

That sounds like it would work. I just don't get how to set all that up in Handbrake subtitle settings.

Your selected output container (MP4) and provided subtitles (VOBSUB) are not compatible, per the MP4 spec.

You can switch to the MKV container, or you can find some text subs to add.

For Plex, use MKV.

I always keeps my .srt files externally from the video file, in the same folder. Then you have no issues.

If the name of the video file is
"My Video File.mp4"
...
name the .srt file
"My Video File.en.srt" for English sub
"My Video File.fr.srt" for French sub
etc.
