Large File Size When Converting Old Kids DVDs

Post by dl777 »

Description of problem or question:

When I backup an old kids DVD (Richard Scarry Busytown) it creates a very large file. I use Fast 480p30 preset but it still creates a huge mkv file (6GB), I have noticed this happen on older 4:3 DVDs. How can one change the settings to make them smaller?

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

Rip older DVD to folder and then use handbrake to process with above preset.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.3.0

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Windows 10

Re: Large File Size When Converting Old Kids DVDs

Post by JohnAStebbins »

Am I reading this right? It's a 4 hour "kids" show (don't know many kids who can sit through 4 hours)?

6GB for 4 hours worth of content is not all that bad. But if you want to make it smaller, slide the quality slider left on the video pane.

You may also want to apply a denoise filter, depends on what the video looks like though. Old SD video may have artefacts that can result in increased file size. Someone might be able to make better recommendations on filter settings if you post a capture of a frame so we can see if there's anything worth filtering.

Use a slower video encoder preset and a higher RF number.
