1.3.0 Crashing with Catalina on start of Rip of file

Post by movin4steve »

Description of problem or question: Version 1.3.0 will transcode a non-encrypted family DVD to a MK4 video. However, when attempting to transcode from a dvdmedia file (already ripped to hard drive), Handbrake crashes immediately upon source selection. It fails consistently. Other programs are capable of doing the transcode so the video itself is OK. No activity log directly from Handbrake - it crashes before one is created. I have attached a grab of the Mac's crash log (also reported to Apple). Pastebin copy attached.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable): Multiple files tried, all failed. Crash occurs every time. Handbrake activity log. Have tried deleting and reinstalling Handbrake, no improvement. Note that occasionally Handbrake hangs up when transcoding directly from the DVD so that's why I pre-ripped to files (used Ripit).

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0): Handbrake version 1.3.0

Operating system and version (: Mac OS 10.15.1, Catalina

HandBrake Activity Log ***required***

It shouldn't crash, but HandBrake can't read encrypted dvd.

It's not encrypted. Both the DVDs and the ripped files are UNENCRYPTED.

Yes, it shouldn't crash. What's the movies? Maybe someone on the team has got it and can try to reproduce the issue.

They are home made burned DVDs from old Digital 8 family videos. Handbrake will generally read, extract and encode to M4V directly from the DVD but not from a ripped DVD file on my storage drive. Handbrake crashes immediately upon attempting to open the source file, even before starting the extraction.

Missing an activity log that may contain some debug.

I can't provide and activity log because it crashes too early to create one as noted in my posting. I did list the only crash log that is available - the one from Apple.

I loaded the entire crash log on Pastebin but hopefully the small segment attached will provide a clue to someone. Again - Handbrake crashes and terminates before it can create an activity log.

They're all written out to disk, as detailed in the link in the bold underlined text on the pink background at the top of the page.

Maybe it doesn't like something in the .dvdmedia (what did you use to create it)?

You could probably work around it by using MakeMKV to create an MKV file, and re-encoding it with HandBrake if required.

Also, mduell is right, logs are written to disk. The scan logs are written to HandBrake-activitylog.txt -- said file is cleared when you re-launch HandBrake -- so long as you don't relaunch it after the crash, you can grab the file's contents which will contain useful info for diagnosing the problem.

But the documentation needs updating for version 1.3.0, due to sandboxing, the location has changed:

Code: Select all

~/Library/Containers/fr.handbrake.HandBrake/Data/Library/Application Support/HandBrake/
I recommend the following procedure:

1) open HandBrake, do not scan your DVD

2) open the Activity window

3) right-click, then "Open Activity Logs Directory in Finder"

4) move up one folder (HandBrake opens the EncodeLogs folder, the main scan/activity log is a folder above)

5) back to HandBrake, scan your DVD, wait for HandBrake to crash

6) back to Finder, open HandBrake-activitylog.txt and get the log contents

Same kind of data I saw before. That's the reason I provided the Mac's crash codes - hoping to show the exception that caused the crash.

Hmm, maybe the log isn't flushed fast enough before the crash? his looks like a log after re-launching HandBrake, rather than pre-crash, but oh well.

Using MakeMKV on the .dvdmedia is your best bet, I think.

That's what I ended up doing. Not sure why Handbrake crashes instantly after selecting the source but I found a work around without it. Thank you anyway to the folks who actually read and helped try to diagnose the problem.
