H264 Intel Quick sync no longer working with new laptop

Post by zumo »

Hi!

I bought a new laptop with an Intel i7-8695U processor. The integrated graphic card is a UHD Graphics 620 which should support Quick sync video encoding.

My problem is: I can't chose the H264 Intel Quick sync codec in the video tab anymore. I have the latest drivers installed and my WIndows 10 is up to date.
What could be the reason?

I had no problems with this isssue with my old computer which had Intel Graphis 5000.

Thanks!

We'd need an activity log.

Either, it's not enabled in Preferences -> video, or potentially you've bought a laptop from a manufacturer that ships drivers without or non-working quicksync support.

I can't give you an activity log because I can't even chose the H264 Quick sync as codec in the video tab (it is simply not listed in the available codecs).

I also can't enable it in Preferences (it is grey).

With other software like MediaCoder or Adobe Media Encoder Qick sync is working without any problems. I got the official graphic drivers from Intel installed and they are up to date.

A scan log would be sufficient. It contains the required information.

How can I create one?

Open any file, open activity window and it'll be there

It's the NVIDIA GeForce MX230 that's causing the problem.

Direct3D 9 doesn't allow for QuickSync to operate unless there is a display attached to the card. In the case of the laptop, there likely won't be.

The nightly build uses Direct3D11 which no longer has this limitation. (See the download page)

FWIW, it's working fine on my Intel HD 620 graphics, i5 8250, 8GB.

That said, why are you interested in using h264 QSV? Sure it's fast, and also u-g-l-y.
I have to keep it around CQ14 to even suggest comparing to x264, and by then it's quite a bit larger. I call that negative returns.

Thanks, but there is no difference with the nighty build. I still can't enable it in Preferences :(

Hmmm I have Direct3D12 installed. Maybe that`s the reason?

Problem solved!

I restored my system from the old computer to the new one with a backup image (using AOMEI Backupper with universal restore).
I totally forgot to uninstall the old drivers from the old system (different hardware!).
I still had the Intel HD Graphics 5000 installed + the new drivers for the UHD Graphics 620!

After uninstalling all old drivers from the old hardware: Now I can enable Quick Sync again!
